Eric Flint has written some very good novels, including, 1632 (not Clarke type), Slow Train to Arcturus, and Boundary.

Tobias Buckell ought to be on this list.
Also, Myke Cole's books are technically military fantasy, but he approaches the material with such a rigorous attention to detail that I think his work would appeal to SF fans. |
