Book Expo America - More of the Same

Executive Summary:
Publishers fear eBooks and want to preserve bookstores and the paperback. Downward pressures on pricing continue in spite of their best efforts to stop it. Authors want higher royalties. Scott Turow wants a return to Windowing. Amazon is evil.

It sounds like the publisher's argument is "we need to vertically control the market and distribution channels so we can make sure there is a market and distribution system for the value we add."

They seem to be overestimating the value they add significantly more than the market is willing to support.

You would have thought that publishers would have learned from the history of the music industry. It doesn't appear they haven't.

E-books are the future they can just get ready for it. The world is going digital and there's no going back. They need to learn to work with e-books and make more them profitable for the company. Also they should use this venue to see if they can't get more money for writers since they don't have to worry about high production costs. If they wanted to they could make it work for them. But they are going to try and fight and sadly they will lose.

I would not be surprised to see more direct publishing ventures from the major e-book vendors. Amazon is already in the game with its small Encore line. And I think B&N, which is now competing with Amazon for digital self-published titles, will eventually start its own Encore-like vetted publishing business. Why not? Publishing has become so much simpler, especially since authors are doing most of their own promotion anyway.

"Jonathan Galassi, who was clearly in mourning. "Fragmentation seems to be the name of the game," he began, expressing fears about how we can "preserve core activities, protect writers, " and maintain the value of time-honored roles. "

In other words "I have a great job doing the same thing every day. I don't wanna change."
