Small Miracles by Edward M. Lerner (ISFDB, Wikipedia) is his standalone science fiction technothriller novel with horror elements exploring the extent of bodily repair made capable by nanobots as well as the uncertainty as to at what point they will stop and how much of the original human will remain, free courtesy of publisher Phoenix Pick Press, who are e-printing it from its original 2009 Tor edition.

This is their featured Free eBook of the Month for September, and comes with several apropos tie-in deals.

They're in his Mitch Helwig series originally published by St. Martin's Press and Tor in the mid-80s, and both have previously been offered free, albeit a long time ago. I'll admit I wasn't too impressed with the first book when I read it years ago, since it struck me as surprisingly reactionary (but then, it's a vintage retro piece) especially for a metropolitan Canadian setting, but allowing for that, it's a reasonably decent pushed-too-far-into-vigilantism sort of story, so YMMV. That said, it seems that the original short stories the novels are based upon received nominations for the Aurora Award back in the day.

When Brent Cleary, demonstrating a beta-test protective "nanosuit" to potential customers, gets trapped in a massive pipeline explosion, only the nanosuit saves him. Smart nanobots integrated into the suit will do whatever it takes to protect the wearer ....

The explosion kills hundreds. It's so destructive that—despite his protective suit—Brent suffers severe injuries. He needs first aid—and lots of it—that the bots scurry to provide ....
