For me, the issue was that images were scaled 3x horizontally. This is because the images were saved with RGB color information for each pixel, instead of just one value for greyscale. The solution was to open the image in an image editor (I'm using GIMP), set Image -> Mode -> Grayscale, and then save as .png or (non-progressive) .jpg . This worked!
