HTML doc type kindle?

If this is an obvious question I apologize.

I am new to HTML coding but have managed to put a series of books together in HTML code with a clickable table of contents.

It works fine in firefox but won't work when I move it onto my Kindle to read.

I am wondering if this is due to the doc type declaration <!doctype html>
as I have no idea what this should be for kindle content.

I've even gone to kindle dtp website and had a look but cannot find any info on this.

Any help appreciated.

Kindles don't support HTML natively, do they? Are you converting with something?

If you're converting, try this:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">

Thank you Frabjous for your reply.

I just got an email back from Joshua Tallent (who is an author on Kindle formatting) and he says you don't need a doctype declaration for publishing or transfering your work on the Kindle to read.

And yes I realise now that you have to convert HTML before putting on the Kindle so I am now using mobipocket creator to make a .prc file - which works, hurrah!

Maybe this might help other people creating work for Kindle viewing.
