The Unpublished Gunn by James Gunn
New from ReAnimus Press: THE UNPUBLISHED GUNN by James Gunn
https://ReAnimus.com/1657 (available in both ebook and paperback) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LZWSNC6 An exciting collection of SFWA Grandmaster James Gunn's never before published stories. Includes:
From the introduction: "This [book] is not about the stories I sold. Rather it is about the stories I didn't sell. It takes a bit of courage to present them here in this volume ... because they have about them the aura of failure. They weren't good enough. Even now, though, I'm not sure why. When I was writing them I couldn't tell the difference between the ones that sold and the ones that didn't. I wrote them all the same. I don't make these stories available as object lessons in what not to do, although students of writing might analyze them, if they wish, for reasons why they were less successful than my others. Rather I think it would be good to give these stories a chance. They are only nine out of ninety-two, most of them among my earliest. It would feel good to have all my fiction out where people could see and judge it, not just those pieces that editors liked well enough to publish. These stories give me a feeling of something unfinished, of something I once loved and forgot for a while but now have rediscovered. Here are [nine] stories ... Take them for what they are. If you find something to like about them, I will be pleased. If you find them flawed, perhaps you can learn from their mistakes. https://ReAnimus.com/1655 (available in both ebook and paperback) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LQXXDZN An object that shouldn't be there passed within a hundred yards of the space station. No one deduced from the waving of the tall grass and the frightened chatter of birds the shape of the tiger moving silently through the jungle clearing. Tiger! You passed silently through the night, and we blundered upon you. You were fear, awe, hatred, and opportunity. You were knowledge; you were the shape of the unknown. We stopped; we reacted. Some Dreams Are Nightmares by James Gunn
New from ReAnimus Press: SOME DREAMS ARE NIGHTMARES by James Gunn
https://ReAnimus.com/1653 (available in both ebook and paperback) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LNPCPNH Fiction is simply dreams written out. Science fiction consists of the hopes and dreams and fears (for some dreams are nightmares) of a technically based society. --John W. Campbell These stories share a common concept: man has dreamed for centuries about space flight, about happiness, about immortality. If only I could fly to the moon, he has told himself, if only I could find true happiness, if only I could live forever ... then I would be like a god. These stories, however, explore these dreams to the fullest... including the unforeseen consequences. The power of man to dream and make his dreams come true is unlimited, but each step forward must be paid for, there is no such thing as a free lunch, and some dreams are nightmares... The Reading Protocols of Science Fiction by James Gunn & Mike Page
New from ReAnimus Press: THE READING PROTOCOLS OF SCIENCE FICTION: DISCOURSES ON READING SF by (SFWA Grandmaster) James Gunn and Michael R. Page
https://ReAnimus.com/1705 (available in both ebook and paperback) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B098825XN7 "The invitation came online, probably an e-mail. I was aware of the existence of SFF.net, a website that specialized in discussions of science fiction issues, often by authors who were too impatient to get their opinions published in the SFWA Bulletin, which got published every two months and was the battleground for some classic debates and sometimes name-calling... The invitation was to join a discussion--in midstream--about the protocols for reading science fiction. One of the exchanges online included a reference to the fact that I had written about the protocols in a recent article... I didn't read the website regularly, mostly because I didn't have time; these were busy days for me, both teaching and publishing, and my days as president of SFWA and then of SFRA were long over, and the debates were still raging about mostly the same issues. But the debates about the protocols of reading science fiction were still fresh and the discussion about them, if they existed, was still fresh. And the discussion was brisk and sharp, particularly from Damon Knight, with whom I had an interesting relationship since I had read his fiction and his critical opinions... We had met in a bar at the World Science Fiction Convention..." And so begins James Gunn's definitive and fascinating study of the reading protocols of science fiction -- the way readers read science fiction differently than other kinds of fiction. (Or, do they?) The journey may seem academically dry, but is anything but, as it involves all sorts of beloved personalities and brawling debates about reading, writing, the very definition of science fiction itself, and what sets it apart from other fiction, and, ultimately, what makes us what we are as humans. The lively debate involves Damon Knight and many other professional science fiction writers and critcs. The book includes Samuel R. Delany's key essay on the subject, and several by James Gunn, to thoroughly explore the subject. This is James Gunn's second to last book, finished just before his death, and a most fitting capstone to his incredible career, all carefully put together with his friend and associate, Michael R. Page. It's a must-read for any fan of the science fiction genre and those who write and study it. Lots more new books from ReAnimus Press - see the list at www.reanimus.com/new |

The Rockin' SkyHorse Blues by Bruce Taylor
New from ReAnimus Press: THE ROCKIN' SKYHORSE BLUES by Bruce Taylor
https://ReAnimus.com/1701 (available in both ebook and paperback) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XK15XCJ These stories from "Mr. Magical Realism" represent a wide variety of style and content, but most of them are explorations of self-expression that fit the definition of surrealism, and later, magic realism and then a blending of magic realist writing techniques and perspective with the three main branches of Imaginative Literature, science fiction, horror and fantasy. That being said, not all these stories in this collection are of magic realist persuasion; several are science fiction, or stories with unusual perspectives on the craft of writing. But, no matter what Bruce writes, there is a theme that runs through much of his work: We don't see reality as bizarre, because we've all come to agree that the bizarre is "normal reality." Of course it isn't. What reality is--is incomprehensible, never mind life itself. But let's not let that get in the way of loving it, loving our fellow creatures who inhabit this world with us, loving the planet from whence we come and love being the mortal mammals that we are on this third planet--around a star. "Works that are fascinating, insightful and downright fun to read" --Ben Bova "A writer of imagination and insight." --Terry Brooks "As rich and poetic as Bradbury at his finest." --William F. Nolan, author, Logan's Run "A very gifted, short fiction writer." -- Jeff VanderMeer, author, The Southern Reach Trilogy Lots more new books from ReAnimus Press - see the list at www.reanimus.com/new |

Masters of Evolution by (SFWA Founder and Grandmaster) Damon Knight
New from ReAnimus Press: MASTERS OF EVOLUTION by (SFWA Founder and Grandmaster) Damon Knight
https://ReAnimus.com/1673 (available in ebook + paperback) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RZ9JXT2 SHOWDOWN WITH MONSTERS! Alvah Gustad was typical of New York City's twenty million citizens. He took for granted such luxuries as synthetic food and robot-servants, and he knew beyond a doubt that the Cities offered the only acceptable way of life for civilized Man! But roaming the vast plains between the continent's five Cities, ever growing and expanding, were the dreaded tribes of Muckfeet. In direct antithesis to the City dwellers, these illiterate savages actually grew food and raised animals. And how they smelled! It was so bad that Alvah could feel his stomach churn at the mere mention of their name. There was one thing in the Muckfoot territory that the Cities did need, though--metal ores. And Alvah, faced with the job of liaison to the tribes around New York, had to somehow make his patriotism outweigh his nausea. If he succeeded, the Cities would be monuments to eternity; if he failed, the dreaded Muckfeet would become the MASTERS OF EVOLUTION. Alvah Gustad: The fate of an empire rested on the condition of his stomach. Beej Hofmeyer: She looked like a woman, but she smelled like a Muckfoot! Doc Bither: When he raised a kitten, you couldn't be sure if it would turn out to be a cat or a tiger. Manager Wytak: Bravery was something he always looked for in other people, but never in himself. Artie Brumbacher: He couldn't read or write, but nevertheless he was a scholar. Jerry Finch: To his way of thinking, there was nothing unusual about being a gardener in an Iron Pit. (Note: Is an expansion of the novelette "Natural State.") Lots more new books from ReAnimus Press - see the list at www.reanimus.com/new |
