The Eneloop or other NiMH cells are much heavier than Lithium for the same capacity (though curiously close to same volumetric capacity) and higher self discharged. Though they don't degrade if stored discharged. OTOH, bad stuff happens if you try to charge a flat Lithium cell, so if it's left too long the internal charger won't charge it at all.

Well, I did say it was a dream device. I know it's not a realistic hope any time soon.

But as an alternative to a display with transparent black, there's also solar cells now that are partly transparent and absorb energy in low IR freqs or high UV freqs and pass most visible frequencies. That could be put over the display instead of under it.

And, more practically, I hardly ever charge my device on purpose. The time I spend side loading (while distracted reading email and these forums) is typically long enough.
