What a crude, dismissive and derogatory way to parse their statement. It also bears no ACTUAL resemblance to what they said, suggesting as it does that the decision was lazy and self-indulgent, with no evidence at all to support that assumption. TANSTAAFLibrary, perhaps instead of contemning their decision with vulgarity, YOU could offer to step in and fill the breach? |

No big deal. There is nothing valuable in public domain books. If a book was written or translated so long ago, it probably has a bad translation (they didn't even have real dictionaries and Wikipedia those days), an old orthography, or is so incomprehensible it needs comments. Both of those remove it from public domain.
A text composed 70 years ago and untouched since are just a waste of bytes. |

As for me, since I became a member here, I've been spending as much of my free time as I can afford (and sometimes more) preparing ebooks for the Patricia Clark Memorial Library. But thanks for the friendly encouragement. What is TANSTAAFLibrary, btw? |

There's nothing remotely hypocritical about being proud of having contributed to the early development of a service but finding it necessary to stop being one of those providers. It is rather unlikely the University in question has infinite resources, deciding that the resources they do have are best used elsewhere now that there are several alternatives to the service they helped initiate is not hypocritical or lazy. A gracious user would thank them for their previous service, not insult them for having decided they need to stop.

And yet: It was a library! You don't just shut down a library and throw away the books. Find someone else willing to put them on their servers, or at least publish a warning that you are planning to shut down so that people can download the books before that. If someone responsible cared for the library, they would have done something to save it, even if it had to be shut down. So I still think that statement is hypocritical. |

Disappointment, yes. But hypocritical? I don't see that. I don't see much. It seems a statement that deliberately says as little as possible, which probably means that they can't - or don't want to - talk about it.

As well as the Wayback Machine, it may well be accessible through TROVE, the Australian National Library digital collection, which has for some time been collecting copies of Australian websites. The two I run are accessible through Trove, and since I am closing one down, I know that it will continue there.

Would there be any legalities in someone making an archive of the Adelaide Ebook Library available?

It would be the same situation as https://www.fadedpage.com/index.php
Unfortunately the USA Corporations want to keep extending copyright and making it retrospective. The US Government then makes it a condition of trade treaties. It's immoral and corporate greed. Generally the estates of the creator do not benefit. |

Sometimes, I did write "Generally". Mostly it's to benefit the corporations.
