Various: Past Masters Forty; v1, 20 Aug 2021
Two authors I hadn't found before, both writers of series and non-series crime stories, and active in the years after WW1: Christopher B Booth, who among other stopries had the "Mr Clackworthy" series of con-man stories; and Ernest M Poate, whose series character was the grumpy medical man Dr Bentiron. Also an amusing crime spoof by Carolyn Wells, probably from one of her numerous juvenile girls' books; comedy from Ellis Parker Butler; and others. Something of a crime story special.
1: Mr. Marston's Chauffeurette / Ellis Parker Butler 2: Phyllis in the Wood / Alice and Claude Askew 3: The Bigelow Murder Mystery / Frederic Van Rensselaer Dey 4: Success / Owen Oliver 5: Prey / C S Montanye 6: Doctor Bentiron's Addict Case / Ernest M. Poate 7: Mr Clackworthy and the Auto Rim / Christopher B. Booth 8: Plain Soda / Ernest M. Poate 9: The Mystery of the Jade Buddha / Carolyn Wells 10: In His Brother's Job / Christopher B. Booth 11: Mr Clackworthy Goes to Jail / Christopher B. Booth 12: Well Done / Ernest M. Poate 13: Through the Looking Glass / Ernest M. Poate 14: By Way of Experience / Anna Alice Chapin 15: Three Alike / Ernest M. Poate 16: Vials of Wrath / Ernest M. Poate 17: The Sparrow / Christopher B. 40! wow! Gratulations, Terry!
One think - I was very interested in the Carolyn Wells Story, but the search of the original was fruitless. There were five issues of Detective Story Magazine in 1919, but none on July 10, and the story is not in any of the five issues. Finally I found out that it was an old classic from 1906, which appeared as a reprint on 7.10.1919. |

Aha! I see what went wrong: 7.10.1919 could be 7 Oct or 10 July depending on where you're from. I messed it up. I've read one or two short crime stories where that is the clue...

Anyway, Terry, its a worthy round number - The Butler is very funny, and Poate is a real discovery.
