Calibre Crashes

Everytime I start Calibre, it crashes. The few times it didn't, as
soon as I tried to do something, it crashed. I managed to get an epub
book added, but can't get it to upload to my device (and convert) as
it crashes every time I try. I've tried all the suggestions on the calibre
site and have done all the troubleshooting, but to no avail. Have
uninstalled, run registry cleaner, rebooted, reinstalled, tried
download from different mirrors, everything-literally. Any
suggestions or help with this issue?

As I suggested on the bug report use the command line ebook0convert to convert your book. It's part of calibre, I dont have the time to walk you through how to use the command line on windows, but hopefully someone who does will be along shortly.

You might want to elaborate a little on this part of your post:

What error messages are you getting, if any? What behaviour are you experiencing? What's your system config?
Since you already seem to have discussed some of this in a bug report, a link to that ticket would be good to have, as well.

Edit: As for help using ebook-convert, if you have questions that aren't answered by the manual, ask away.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/741935 is the link to the ticket. I am running on Windows XP. I can't use the command line in Calibre as every time I open it, it closes within 10 seconds. If I quickly click on something, it closes again within 10 seconds without completing anything. If I can't get into the program, because it keeps crashing/shutting down on its own, how am I to run a command? Also, I am not receiving ANY error messages. Absolutely nothing. It just keeps shutting down no matter what I try. Someone please help! I've now spent days working on this!!

This link doesn't go to your ticket.

Are you sure calibre isn't just starting in the system tray?

Exactly what string are you using to start calibre from the command line?

Try using this string to start calibre from the Command prompt.

calibre-debug -g 1> log.txt 2>&1

After it "crashes" view the log.txt file and post the results here.

You are not, by chance, just typing, say, an ebook-convert command into the "Run..." dialog box in the start menu? If so, that fast-closing window has the output that would help you. You'd have to execute the command from the command line- open a command prompt window and go from there (either execute "cmd" via the run dialog or start the command prompt via the start menu).

Here's what I get when I type cmd and then the instructions given (it comes up as C:\Documents and Settings\Owner on it's own rather than just a C:\ like I used to get):

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ebook-convert.exe The_Body_Farm.epub The_Body_Fa
rm.mobi
Cannot read from C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\The_Body_Farm.epub

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>

I can't get it out of C:\Documents and Settings\Owner by the way. Never had that issue before. This isn't where the epub file is located either, not sure if that matters or why it can't read it.

I don't have any idea what any of this means though. This is a result of my typing in calibre-debug -g 1> log.txt 2>&1 as you suggested at the cmd prompt.

Kovid: Here's what I get at the cmd prompt when I put in ebook-convert.exe

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ebook-convert.exe
Usage: ebook-convert.exe input_file output_file [options]

Convert an ebook from one format to another.

input_file is the input and output_file is the output. Both must be specified as
the first two arguments to the command.

The output ebook format is guessed from the file extension of output_file. outpu
t_file can also be of the special format .EXT where EXT is the output file exten
sion. In this case, the name of the output file is derived the name of the input
file. Note that the filenames must not start with a hyphen. Finally, if output_
file has no extension, then it is treated as a directory and an "open ebook" (OE
B) consisting of HTML files is written to that directory. These files are the fi
les that would normally have been passed to the output plugin.

After specifying the input and output file you can customize the conversion by s
pecifying various options. The available options depend on the input and output
file types. To get help on them specify the input and output file and then use t
he -h option.

For full documentation of the conversion system see
http://calibre-ebook.com/user_manual/conversion.html

Whenever you pass arguments to ebook-convert.exe that have spaces in them, enclo
se the arguments in quotation marks.

Options:
--version show program's version number and exit

-h, --help show this help message and exit

If I try to put in the name of the book (The_Body_Farm.epub) as the input and (The_Body_Farm.mobi) as the output, I get what I showed up in the #7 post on here.

Delete all those invalid font files and you should be fine.

I can't get it out of C:\Documents and Settings\Owner by the way. Never had that issue before. This isn't where the epub file is located either, not sure if that matters or why it can't read it.
You can't change directories? That part definitely isn't normal. That message, though, is perfectly normal if the ebook file is not in the folder you're currently in.
What happens if you do try to change directories?
