Books similar to C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series?

I just picked up a short story that was a prequel to Foreigner. I know she has another book in the series coming out in April. Can anyone recommend any books that have similar themes? When there's a fight scene, I find that I want them to get to the "good stuff", which is, for me, the cultural and linguistic differences.

I'll probably give these a try. I'm currently working my way through the entire Foreigner series, and enjoying it a lot.

Good recommendation, thanks! Not as complex as Foreigner, but I liked the first book a lot and looking forward to reading the rest :-)

Things get more involved as the series progresses.

I love this series. Unfortunately as I am downsizing my house - I no longer collect books in paper format. Here in Australia the Foreigner series is not available in epub - or any other electronic format. I have to rely on US friends purchase and send me a copy. I would be dismayed if I couldn't get the next book. I think they are a fabulous series - a really good cultural study. Shades of Japanese culture.... believable linguistics., excellent believable characters and conniving politics. I have started from the beginning and am reading them from 1 to 19 continuously at this moment... (currently at Cajieri's 9th b'day party!) Love it - can't put it down - ruined many dinners..... sleepless nights reading...... chronic.

I think I will give this series a go to when I have finished book 19 of Foreigner. It will be so hard to stop there.....
