Twain, Mark: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Illustrated). v2. 22 Oct 2012
Adventures of HUCKLEBERRY FINN
by Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) (1835-1910) with 174 Illustrations by E. W. Kemble (1861-1933) and 13 illustrations by James Harley (no biographical info available) First published 1885 The text of this book is in the public domain world-wide because the author died more than 100 years ago. Mark Twain is most noted for his novels, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” (1876), and its sequel, “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” the latter often called "the Great American Novel." Among dozens of titles, some of his works include “The Innocents Abroad,” “A Tramp Abroad,” “Roughing It,” “Life on the Mississippi,” “The Prince and the Pauper,” “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court,” and many more. Huck fakes his own death to escape from his abusive drunken father, and shortly thereafter encounters the runaway slave Jim. The pair embark upon a journey to freedom, riding a raft down the Mississippi River, experiencing many adventures and encountering numerous colorful characters. The story is as many-layered as an onion; it may be read as simply a boy’s adventure story, but it is imbued with (sometimes subversive) humor, sizzles with satire, and might even be considered as an allegory. “Huckleberry Finn” has been the center of controversy since its first publication, with some critics then and now decrying its coarse language, bad taste, and abhorrent lifestyle; bans then and now by some libraries and schools; and several sanitized versions which replace the infamous ubiquitous “N-word” with some Politically Correct term. The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. By satirizing Southern antebellum society that was already a quarter-century in the past by the time of publication, the book is an often scathing look at entrenched attitudes, particularly racism. The drifting journey of Huck and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, down the Mississippi River on their raft may be one of the most enduring images of escape and freedom in all of American literature. —some of the above information adapted from Wikipedia ------ EXCERPT: Spoiler:
------ Text based on the Project Gutenberg plain-text transcription; I formatted curly quotes, emdashes, and restored italics. 174 half-page illustrations; code borrowed from Jellby's edition of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" to wrap the text around chapter-header images. (Thank you Jellby, you always seem to have solutions to my problems.) Embedded decorative font for titling and initial caps. No drop-caps. Text-wrap and no-wrap versions, with cross-linked inline ToC for both. BUT --- the chapter-head images-as-links in the text-wrap version don't work in my Sony reader or the Sony desktop reader software, but do work on Calibre reader and Adobe Digital Editions on the desktop --- do they work on other readers? Any feedback would be appreciated. In "text-wrap" version 2, links have been changed to the first word of each chapter. Version 2 has additional 5000-word segment linked to Chapter 16. Bonus package --- The zip contains three additional illustrations, also by E. W. Kemble: the full-page photogravures from the 1904 edition from Harper & Brothers Publishers. This is not a “sanitized” version, you will encounter the “n-word”. That said, enjoy the read! =================== EDIT: Uploaded version 2, with additional text and pictures, and error corrections. Thanks for the unexpurgated upload, GG. Mr. Twain would have hated the imposition of euphemisms.
Has the text been proofread? I'm asking because I organize my books along those lines. Thanks again. |

To be very honest, no, not meticulously proofed.
I did some spot-checks, the text looked very clean, and it was "smooth-read". I did not find any errors on my read-through. If anybody finds errors, please give me feedback, and I will do a thorough proof, and re-upload. |

Thank you, that is a very nice compliment. Jellby is a great book producer, and I based my Huckleberry Finn formatting on his beautiful edition of Tom Sawyer.
I'm afraid that I won't be re-doing the Tom Sawyer book, but you are certainly welcome to download Jellby's version and re-format it the way you want. Thanks for downloading Huckleberry Finn! |

Or you can tell me what you don't like (not here, in the Tom Sawyer's thread, please), and maybe I can fix it, or create an alternate version, or help you reformatting it.

New and Improved Huckleberry! Now with MORE RAFT !!! Uploaded version 2. I have included an additional 5000-word segment (illustrated) as a page linked to Chapter 16. It had been published two years previously in “Life on the Mississippi” as ‘an unpublished chapter.’ This segment was excluded from “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” partly because of Twain’s concern that buyers might feel they were getting a “reprint,” partly due to publisher’s concerns over length. This increased file-size by about 1 MB. In the text-wrap version, cross-linked table of contents -- links have been changed from the problematic header images to the first word of each chapter. Those words are not underlined, but they _are_ active links. Newly proof-read, and a number of text and formatting errors have been corrected. My apologies for posting version 1 with such errors. Calling all nit-pickers -- any feedback will be appreciated. Last edited by GrannyGrump; 10-22-2012 at 03:45 AM. |

Thanks for the new version with added text and more proofing, Granny -- and for naming the file of each version so that keeping track is that much easier.
Jelby: I quite liked your version and appreciate your efforts in general. I have no idea what Karimali is on about -- if the criticism were valid, wouldn't our complainant have answered your question? |

Although I prefer the appearance of the wrapped version, it doesn't seem to work on my Libra. The No Wrap saved me a lot of hassle, thanks.
Just have to sort out how to solve the problem I'm having with Tom Sawyer. |

@ Bookcat --- is the image display problem the same as your problem with Jellby's Tom Sawyer, with the "other" images displaying too small?
If so, I am wondering if I might try setting the "other" images in svg wrappers to to see if that will keep them full size. |

But the Wrapped version and Jelby's Tom Sawyer both strangely 'squash' the chapter images of the kepub version to the top of the screen, so that it's all mishappen, as though someone had sat upon the image. If I use the epub, the chapter image looks fine, although the wrapped text overlaps the images. The other images are very small. Your no wrap version solves the problem of the images, but loses the appearance of an antiquated book, which the wrapped one seems to have in Calibre. I'm choosing to use the no wrap kepubbed version. There isn't the option of a no wrap for Jelby's Tom Sawyer. I hope this makes sense and helps. I'm not sure what's causing the 'squashed' appearance. Perhaps it has something to do with Kobo? Or Kepub. (I use Kepubify to kepub.) Thanks for your wonderful work. |

Hmmmm.... I — um — “borrowed” Jellby's inventive formatting for the chapter heads (same as Tom Sawyer) This was, of course, 10 years ago, and Kobo apparently does odd things to that special work-around formatting. I have only used that a very few times since, and never got any feedback about it until now.
I hope Jellby replies to your query. Maybe he will know of a fix. |

I've been wondering if the patches on the Libra might have something to do with the strange display of the chapter images?
All my patches were kindly sent to me by JSWolf after I'd had lots of trouble creating my own. |
