Nesbit, Edith: The Red House (Illustrated). v1. 01 July 2015

THE RED HOUSE
by Edith Nesbit (1858–1924)
illustrated by Arthur Ignatius Keller (1867–1924)

First published in 1902.

The text and illustrations of this book are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA.

Edith Nesbit, English author and poet, is primariy regarded as a writer of children’s books. However, she also wrote over two dozen novels and story collections for adults.

The Red House is a light-hearted tale about the first year of marriage of a happy young couple. Len inherits a huge old white elephant of a mansion, and Chloe insists on living in the Red House, although they really can't afford it.

Those who read Nesbit’s books about the Bastable children may recall in New Treasure Seekers the episode of “The Young Antiquaries,” and the first introduction of “Mr. and Mrs. Red House.” This book brings the opportunity to learn about that adventure from the adults’ perspective.

=================

Text is from the 1916 eighth edition from Methuen & Co.; it includes dozens of text fragments (more than 4,000 words) which are not present in the Harper & Bros. first edition. Illustrations are from the first edition.

Punctuation, diacritics, and italics have been formatted. Chapter heads are cross-linked to in-line Table of Contents; List of Illustrations provides links to images. Decorative fonts for titling, dividers, etc.

Converted from Sigil-created epub with Calibre.

=================

It's a fun, fast read, and surprisingly undated (references to Victorian-era clothing and transportation don't count). Hope you enjoy it!
