Kobo Aura: Enable publisher fonts embedded in epub?

Hello,

I just purchased an epub, and on one of the first pages, there is a note recommending to enable "publisher's fonts" or "original fonts", because the author and publisher have created a font specifically for this book to designate character names.

I cannot find where to enable this feature in my Kobo Aura (first Aura, from 2013-2014, also please not I never updated firmware or connected to internet since purchase in 2014 - firmware version is 3.8.0 because I only purchase drm-free epubs).

This is the book in question (in french, it's a new one, couldn't find an english link for purchase with the font recommendation): https://www.epagine.fr/ebook/9782370...alain-damasio/

If I change the font in the "Aa" menu while reading a book, I only gt a list of fonts ("Default Document", Amasis, Avenir Next, Caecilia, Georgia, Gill Sans, Kobo Nickel, Malabar, Gothic, Ryumin, Dyslexie, OpenDyslexic) but that's it, no option to enable publisher's font. Is this a setting that is found elsewhere? Or could I circumvent the problem by copy-pasting the fonts contained in the epub in a common folder on the Aura?

Thanks for you help!

This is the content of the css files (I added return chars):

title.css:
Code:

Select "Publisher Default" from the Aa menu. (In older firmware versions it was called "Document Default" I think.)

Ah, thanks. I didn't think it was that, because the font really looks weird, like when you display a document for which the OS doesn't have the right font and replaces it with something similar... some characters are much thinner than others. I'll look into that font directly I suppose, see if it's supposed to be shown like that.

Thanks!

Now that your main issue has been resolved: I would recommend upgrading from firmware 3.8.

I also have an original 6" Aura and the later firmware really is an improvement. Searching my library for instance is quite a bit faster than it used to be.

I didn't upgrade it because I have another device which was upgraded by accident when it connected to the internet, and the new homepage was just horrendous...

There's a home page? Seriously, I spend so little time looking at the home page, I'm pretty much indifferent as to the appearance. The other improvements in the firmware affect my reading and that's what I spend my worriting on.

i believe you mean the home screen not the home page but i agree it's (i will be polite) undesirable compared to the old home screen.

indeed there is a home page/home screen although the new home screen is about as useful as a ice cream teapot imeho.

As I've said several times, I seldom spent any time using the home screen, never mind spending any time just looking at the home screen/page/whatever anyone wants to call it and admiring its aesthetics or lack thereof. To me, it's just a place I pass through on the way to my next read and it's design is a matter of near total indifference. As long as the search icon works, the rest is lagniappe.

And for the OP, using epub format, if the publisher has set up the embedded font properly, it won't matter what font is selected on the Aa menu as it will be overridden by the epub style. Several ebooks I've read have an an embedded font used for special items (chapter headers are the most common) and it doesn't matter what font I select, the chapter header used the embedded font.

OTOH, too many ebooks use fonts that are not available or use simple serif and san-serif which makes it a pain to select another font.

the aesthetics of the new home screen have absolutely nothing to do with why i dislike it. the old home screen is considerably more functional/usable for my own personal preferences.

Whereas for me, if the search icon is available, that's pretty much what I am interested in on the home screen. Only 4 current reads? I seldom have more than 1 book in progress. The shifting links at the bottom? Don't use them unless I am testing so a don't care. Pretty much the same for the rest of the page. The search icon is a little magnifying glass in the upper left corner vs. the old massive waste of screen space search button. No real difference to me. Does it go to to search when I tap it? If yes, all's well. If it doesn't? Time to start complaining.

Does the firmware support series sort from search? Does the firmware support search on Overdrive so I can do library loans on the device? Do my previous search terms show? That is important to me.

Obviously, your preferences are not the same as mine. Horses for courses.

Not true with the Kobo Forma that I'm using. See this thread where jackie_w figured it out. If I select a font from the Aa menu it uses it for everything. The only way I get the embedded fonts is to select Publisher Default. Sucks because I'd rather have it the way it works for you.

I just noticed jackie_w's ETA; so if I understand it correctly it does what I see because all of my sideloads are kepub since I'm using the enhanced driver.

Why would I want to show a fractional percentage of what is on my ereader on the home screen? I stopped using collections when the number of collections went over 300. Pretty much, the only situation where I use something other than search to locate a book is when I generate a random number and goto that page in the library view to select a random book as my next read. The pseudo-random number generator lives on my phone not the ereader, BTW.
