Free (Kindle) Death in Oak Ridge by Chuck Mason [Sheriff vs Serial Killer Western]
Death in Oak Ridge by Chuck Mason, a pseudonym for prolific multi-genre British author Donald S. Rowland (ISFDB, SFE), is his vintage standalone western historical action adventure novel with strong mystery/crime investigation elements, this one apparently the Wild West version of a serial killer thriller as the beleaguered sheriff tries to gather evidence to solve the case of several vicious murders, becoming the obligatory race against time when he learns that his own wife is the next intended victim, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Pioneering imprint.
This was originally published in 1976 by Robert Hale. Incidentally, by my count we are now at no fewer than 27 freebies across 2 genres from Rowland under various pseudonyms, which is really quite generous of Endeavour in providing a thorough introduction to his vintage and more recent work, which I hope Gentle Readers have been enjoying. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) Description A killer is on the loose… Lon Renney is the town marshal of Oak Ridge, Kansas, where six townsfolk have been murdered by a vicious killer who leaves no clues to their identity. Even the county sheriff and his tough deputies are unable to uncover evidence, and a shroud of fear and distrust lays thick over the county. Renney soon becomes so frustrated in his vain attempts to catch the killer that he considers turning in his badge in the hope that someone more capable will take over. That is until they discover that the next intended victim is Renney’s future wife, Barbie, who also happens to be the Judge’s daughter… Renney soon finds his own life in danger when he makes contact with the killer on two deadly occasions, each time coming off second best and making a laughing stock of the country law enforcement. But the stakes reach new heights when Barbie goes missing and Renney soon finds himself in a race against time to solve the case before it is too late… Full of dramatic shoot-outs and plenty of action, Death in Oak Ridge is a classic western adventure – a perfect read for fans of Zane Grey. |
