Is there a way to turn Wifi off?

At home my nook connects to my Wifi, but is there a way to disconnect it when I don't want the wifi on so that it doesn't waste battery life?

Yes. One of the icons on the LCD is WiFi. Select it and turn on Airplane mode. That turns off the WiFi.

You can also put your finger over the time display and the quick settings dialog pops up with the ability to turn off wifi and adjust brightness, orientation and mute/unmute.
