Nemoptic launches A4 flexible e-paper display

Did you think that LG Philips is the only one with a flexible e-paper display? Not at all. Philips has color, but a black and white 14.1" bistable display has now also been launched by Nemoptic.

Electronic News is reporting "Nemoptic announced today that it is launching a new A4-sized E-paper display. The France-based company, which began large volume production of E-paper last month after reaching a manufacturing agreement with Seiko Instruments, said it has already shipped samples of its 210-mm by 297-mm A4 BiNem displays to major office equipment clients."

Here are the specs:
* Black and white display
* 200 dpi
* A4 size
* 1650 x 2340 pixels
* <1 second screen refresh
* No power used except for image changes
* 2mm thick
* Display brightness is above 30%. (Some kind of reflective ratio?)

Oooooh, do we know how much it's going to cost (so I know how much to start saving for)?? I must say, I'm quite excited by all this progress lately!

If you go to the nemoptic website you can look at some of the detailed specs for their current evaluation products.

Good: They promise "Image Change no flashing effect, no image
persistence". And "Response Time <0.25sec/image at Room Temp", which is a nice step.

Bad: "Image Mode B&W (1bit gray scale)" and "(145dpi, sub QVGA)". I guess it is just black or white.

Oh well, hopefully more manufacturers lead to more products lead to more competition lead to much better devices.
Until then, I will stick with my prs-500.

Seems like they're not planning to release a portable reading device yet...

Black & white at 200 dpi would still be pretty good, if they ever do decide to release a reading device. If they can get it up to 300 dpi, the resulting grayscale would be as good as what most inkjet printers produce.

wow, this is really cool. MUCH more exciting that eInk's new screens.

1650x2340 should be gorgeous. But with 200 DPI, id much prefer reading A4 docs on a screen that was smaller than a4. also, how is 2mm flexibility supposed to work? Seems like it'd have a pretty big bending radius.

btw, we don't know anything about how many colors it supports. the thing dalapin posted is NOT what this announcement is about. still, i think i'd rather take 1bit color and 0.25s refresh rate.

The flexibility would mean the screen should be much less fragile, I would think.

Unless one would submit it to frequent UV exposures like all d.....d plastics. Are there UV resistent plastics out there?
