My Paperwhite SE was previously jailbroken using the WatchThis method, I used the rename ota binaries to stop recieving updates but recently it force updated to 5.15.1, KUAL still shows up in the library but I can't open it. Is there a way for me to rebreak my kindle or am I SOL?

My Paperwhite SE was previously jailbroken, recently it force updated to 5.15.1 and I cant access KUAL and by extension KOreader. Is there a way to rebreak the firmware so that I can access my apps again?
Note: I did have rename OTA binaries installed but the update still happened, if someone can help me prevent that in the future that would be great. Last edited by ItAintMe; 03-18-2023 at 03:50 PM. Reason: note |

ItAntMe, if your Kindle had JB and installed JB hotfix/bridge, then you just need to reboot TWICE to let the hotfix/bridge do the magic.
There are a few KUAL extensions that are designed to block the OTA, but I recommend this renameotabin.zip from hius07 to block the OTA update (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...=327879&page=2) because this will rename the required local binaries for the OTA process. Can confirm having the renameotabin extension did not prevent the update from happening if you go online long enough for the update bin to get downloaded. I have a Paperwhite 5 (2021) that was on 5.15.1 and now force updated to 5.15.1.1.
After rebootinging twice, KUAL was not working, but I was able to see a **** JAILBREAK **** message at the bottom of the reboot screen sequence. I then restored KUAL following the instructions here. The updates downloaded from the snapshots thread: - MR Package Installer | kual-mrinstaller-1.7.N-r18983.tar.xz | 2023-Jan-04 23:56:09 - K5 JailBreak Hotfix | JailBreak-1.16.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip | 2023-Jan-04 23:53:15 - KUAL (coplate) | KUAL-ff4134d-20221017.tar.xz | 2023-Jan-04 23:52:23 I first updated MRPI. Then copied both Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.16.N_install.bin and Update_KUALBooklet_ff4134d_install.bin into the mrpackages folder. Run the ";log mrpi" command and the updates did their thing. I also reinstalled the screensavers hack and koreader and both are working. |

I have installed the jailbreak successfully on a Kindle KT3. It booted and shows all the text during boot and then the boot is completed. Also, the update went through (It displayed a message like "Update successful) . I used this file for patching: JailBreak-1.16.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip. The device is stuck in demo mode or it seems. How do I know if everything was successful?

You should've used that custom hotfix bin included inside WatchThis jailbreak zip.

Hey! I wonder if I screwed up something as I try to restore/fix the jailbreak on a Kindle Oasis 3 I just bought (firmware version 5.14.2).
I had noticed that it was unable to run Koreader and many KUAL menu options weren’t working properly, and was told that this seems like an incomplete jailbreak, and I was supposed to re-apply the hot fix. It is worth noting that, before I started over the process of redoing the jail break, the KOA3 already came with RenameOTABinary, which I tried to apply by doing “rename”. It is not clear to me, since many KUAL menu options weren’t working properly, if the renaming actually happened, but I assume it did, because I was not able to run “Update Your Kindle” (grayed out) after loading the hot fix bin onto the Kindle to apply the hot fix bin. This is where I think I screwed up. I then proceeded to do a firmware reset and went through the beginning of the jailbreak process, and I was able to see the “Finished installing jailbreak” line during the boot process. However, when trying to apply the hot fix again, I am, yet again, unable to run “Update Your Kindle” (grayed out) to apply the hot fix. I read somewhere in this thread that this is because the OTA binaries got renamed earlier and the only way to restore it is to do a firmware update with the original 5.14.2 firmware from Amazon and a factory reset. I tried that by putting the Amazon 5.14.2 firmware bin on it and doing a factory reset, which failed with an “Application error” that I had to reboot out of, and so that’s where I am now. I think my current state is: - Jailbroken (can see the “Finished installing jailbreak” on reboot) - Can’t apply hot fix to complete the jailbreak - Can’t apply original Amazon firmware either to rollback the jailbreak What should I do? How do I apply the hot fix without being able to run “Update your kindle”? Is there a way to run the RenameOTABinary again to do the “restore” option? Can I get that and MRPI and KUAL installed without the hot fix? Sorry for the long post, trying to document everything here. Thank you all so much! |

I also just realized I’m still probably in demo mode (I can do ;demo in the search bar, and browser/settings are both grayed out).
Should I manually exit the demo mode by ;exit_demo? Is that why “Update Your Kindle” is grayed out and I can’t apply either the hot fix bin or the original firmware bin? |

Edit: I figured it out, and I will record it here for future reference:
Even though I could not install the hot fix directly from the bin file using "Update Your Kindle", and I was still in demo mode, I found that I could just install KUAL and MRPI, and install the hot fix using MRPI instead. I'm now out of the demo mode and I've just successfully installed KOReader and a bunch of other KUAL extensions. Thanks for all the people who've posted their previous experiences in this thread - it was very helpful! |

Big thanks to @katadelos! ![]() One question is still on my mind: I used the Update_hotfix_watchthis_custom.bin hotfix to clean up all jailbreak files. Does it make sense to apply the Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.16.N_install.bin hotfix now or is this not really necessary? |

PW5 w/ 5.15.0.1 (unregistered)
I saw I need 5.14.1.1 on PW5 for jailbreak, but the current version is 5.15 on amazon. How do I bump up to 5.14.1.1 ? Do I need to be registered to jailbreak? |
