This is tricky and can cause problems. For example, italics and other formating will in most cases disappear and I don't think the OP really wants that. Each style has to be reviewed to see if it can be deleted without issue. Probably 95% of the styles can be removed without issues.

Yes! remove unnecessary fonts and styles. Then do the Split. Or, if you don't want to wade through the muck... Create a New style sheet (and Link line. Yes you can have more than one stylesheet) And Move All that cruft to the New style sheet, Then Split |

theducks: Depending on your workflow, yes this could screw things up. With my workflow it doesn't - I have carefully styled everything in Word, and the styles match up with what I have in the stylesheet I've loaded into Sigil.
This way it is easy to blow away all the embedded style information in the head, replace MsoNormal and I'm good to go! The key is to always use styles to format the text in Word. Assign a style - don't use Ctrl+I to italicize text. Bob |

Wouldn´t a good way to learn this be to look inside the code of a well-formatted epub-book and see how it is done?

That is one thing. You can also take a good look at the tutorial from Pablo and the book from Liz Castro. Those will help.
