@pdurrant: There's usually a few bits and pieces mentioning the panel and/or substrate, and it appeared to track actual HW changes fairly accurately in the past .
On slightly related notes: They kept the proper nightmode support from the Oasis 2, and, from a quick glance, they might be testing some new waveform trickery to make some stuff faster... |

I can't find it now, but I know I saw somewhere earlier that the new Paperwhite was supposed to have the led lights on the top, not the bottom. It certainly seems like they are on the bottom to me.

Thanks for the pictures! (bookmarking this thread)
Did you all open it just for the pictures/fame or is anyone actually using the serial port already? |

I opened it just to look around and decided to snap a couple of pics. I don't have a serial interface right now.

I presume the serial port is the one marked 'S700' on the top-right of the motherboard. A Vcc source should be found on one of the TPs Last edited by matko; 11-29-2018 at 04:30 AM. |

I didn't realize there was so much gunk (or glue, coating) on everything everywhere. I wonder if a solder-less connection will even work here. Oh well...

Yeah, I just didn't expect there to be several layers of it.
white gunk for each connector glue blobs everywhere an additional general coating over everything - only really visible in places where this coating is broken for some reason, like around a screw I didn't touch (you can see it a little in the first picture top right of my previos post) or near one of the connectors where the coating was probably pulled while plugging the connector in? no idea there's a weird rfid chip? antenna? on the back panel (there was a pic of it here). It just happens to be located right above the serial port header. Not sure what it's there for, a wireless serial port would be something else but the location is probably coincidence... Anyhow I'll probably have to solder it in the end. Haven't had time to play with it since taking it apart Last edited by frostschutz; 12-04-2018 at 10:13 AM. |

Maybe you want to fix the title. The Paperwhite goes to 4th gen. Kindle basic numbers to 8th.

@frostschutz: That's for internal tracking during production/transport, AFAWK. There's been one stuck around there on every Kindle for a good long while .
