Pinkerton, Allan: The Expressman and the Detective (Illustrated). v1. 30 Jul 07
A "true life" detective story written by the founder of the world-famous Pinkerton's detective agency, Allan Pinkerton, in 1874. I've not read it yet, but it appears to involve a case of fraud in the southern US. Seems to be well written, although showing a propensity never to use a simple word when a more complex one is available: eg:
He picked up the animal by its caudal appendage... (ie by its tail ) Has a number of excellent period illustrations. Warning: being set in the deep south in less "enlightened" times, this book contains a lot of language which would today be considered racially offensive. Enjoy! Just spotted it in the PG "new releases" list and thought that it sounded interesting.

I read this years ago. It was one of the books in my Grandfather's library (he got rid of it before my Mother had a chance to even get her old books from it.)
Great read. Are you going to do the others posted at PG too? |
