I used this serial adapter (I ordered from the US site, but it seems to be available through Amazon.co.uk also): https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was easy to set the voltage to 1.8v with the jumper.

Yes.
See the set of three pin pairs with a single shorting plug?
Set the shorting plug to the 1.8v position.
Note: You can't see the labels on the pin pairs in that photo, but they are really there.


This adapter only requires 3 wires, Tx, Rx, and Gnd

It has its own built-in voltage reference, so no need to run a fourth wire for that purpose.

That one is only 5.0 volt or 3.3 volt, it does not support 1.8 volt interface levels.
You will see on this forum that some people have used 3.3 volt devices, and without damage to the Kindle.
But the technical manual on the SoC says: 1.8 volt, so that is the only thing that I recommend.

Just want to share my experience.


Tear-down. This is the first time I do it.

A little closer to the mainboard.

Wiring. I used a PL2303 calble from eBay.

Only need Tx, Rx, GnD. The red one is 5V output. We should not touch it.
Solder works is difficult to me. My eyes good but my hand shaking to much.

We should suggest AMZ to improve their serial point, bigger maybe.

Serial mode is now woking. And this is the part make me confused.
When I do "bootm 0xE41000", the last line look like that:

Tried fews things and did not help.
Look at the screen.
OK, let me show you how the Touch-screen look.

At this step, we will have two choices.
01/ Use touch screen
=> (o)-Reboot or Disable Diagg
=> Login screen
Then you can login with root/fiona_something.

And option 2:
Google : sock_init 1888 kindle

From the post of stupidhaiku, just input "exit login"
Then you can login with root/fiona_something.
Next step should be processed exactly as the #1 of this thread.

Sending file via USB mode. USB mode can be enabled via Diag mode by toching the screen.

Any next step could be done with no error.
MRPI and KUAL should be installed just after do jb.sh thing.

And after finished JB, I don't want to do the solder works again. So just keep it inside and close the plastic cover.

Play with Screensaver hack.

exit login

Then you could do the next steps with no issue.

Hold the 'any key' ** down when you see the first characters of the boot message.

Release when the process stops and waits at the prompt.
Because you are already too late when you see the actual message.

If this doesn't work, do you have any idea what else it could be?
I tried this procedure of restarting and pressing Enter for more than 10 times and was unsuccessful.

I can't understand what's wrong. I can read the outputs at the terminal, but without success when pressing any key.

I think you tap the key slower than auto boot procedure.

WHEN are you first pressing the key?
That statement does not seem to follow the directions I gave you.

You must do this exact order:
1) have finger near key to be pressed
2) press restart
3) press the key of your choice AND HOLD IT DOWN
DO NOT wait for any of the messages to appear, press the key down NOW and hold it down.
4) do not let up on the key until the start routine presents the u-boot> prompt.
5) yes, your keyboard will repeat the key that you hold down, while you are holding it down.
But that does no harm.
6) now release the key that you are holding.
