Can you mark a part of a book to not count towards reading progress?
There are parts of books that are not normally intended for reading such as an index, references or end notes (that you either read when they're referenced to in the book or otherwise completely ignore).
Is there a way to mark these parts of an ebook such that an ereader would not count those towards the reading completion of a book (time/pages remaining, percentage of book read, etc.)? |

Since reading progress is purely an app/reader function I would guess that they are not necessarily implemented the same way across apps/devices. Getting consistent results would be difficult.
Things I would try: -putting whatever you don’t want to count at the back of the book so at least it’s not counted until you’re almost done. -playing with linear=no in the opf…. That will most certainly have other effects so caveat emptor |

Thank you, that's pretty much what I was hoping to find. There's no equivalent to "linear=no" for epub 2.0, right?
Do you happen to know if Kobo respects that attribute in kepubs as I intended in the OP? exclude it from word counts towards reading duration etc.? |

Probably not on about 99% of ebooks sold or reading platforms used.
If you are a guru, make a second copy without the extra stuff. Put both in the app/ereader and swap if you need to look stuff up. Reduces bookmark usage too! |

With KOReader, at least you can "Hide nonlinear fragments", with which those won't count in your reading progress in the footer. I'm not sure about other statistics, but when you reach the end of the linear stuff you get a prompt where you can mark the book as finished. |

You could also move this stuff to the front of the eBook so you still have it, but it will count as having been read.
