What is it called?

I have another dumb question.

In fiction books, in order to signal a sudden change of location or time within a chapter, the author inserts a series of "*" or "...", maybe even a graphic.
Is there a name or term used to refer to this device?

Thanks,
Charlie

The memoir class for LaTeX calls it "fancybreak", which, given the usual quality and terminology in the manual, makes me think there is no proper name other than "fancy break"

We call it a space break, and the little ornaments or graphics would be the space break ornament. Most times it's just what looks like a blank line or two, but please don't use blank lines!
