See ==>> https://doc.qt.io/qt-6/qtooltip.html#showText

I suspect you have msecDisplayTime set to -1, shortening the text will shorten the display time, at the expense of not being able to see all the options, which would make it inconsistent with the adjacent buttons.

How about a "Show tooltips?" checkbox preference setting that is checked by default… or better yet a menu item/icon/shortcut that would toggle tooltips off and on.

Aside - I just noticed the Focus on options,in the View menu - I suppose they've always been there

Added - X-post with @KarlG & @DiapDealer's posts.

Tooltips are spread all over many code areas, dialogs, and even inside trees and tables throughout the Sigil codebase, so enabling or disabling them in bulk would be a huge pain. That's not going to happen.

Best I can do is shorten that large tip to make it less annoying.

If I were asked to vote for shorten or leave it as is, I vote for leave it as is… I'm used to pushing the pointer aside.

Windows users could consider using this ==>> Park Cursor Aside Moves The Mouse Cursor When You Start Typing Seems to coexist with Sigil OK - might keep it.

Use QSS to hide tooltips.
Just create/edit a qt_styles.qss file in the Sigil configuration folder and enter there:
Code:
QToolTip {max-width:0; max-height:0; margin:0; padding:0;}
It is worth asking: how many users want to hide tooltips?

Pros: No need to add options in Sigil, any willing user can control the option themselves.

Cons: None?

Hi Becky,

Thanks, but this doesn't seem to work for me. Unless of course I've created the file in the wrong folder. I created it here: /home/karl/.local/share/sigil-ebook/sigil

Cancel that. It DOES work!! I named the file qt_styles.css instead of qt_styles.qss!

Probably not many, I freely admit I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to things like this.

And it works for all tooltips? Even those embedded in tables and trees like the Metadata Editor? If so, wow! You do learn something new every day.

Yes, seems to. I'm now enjoying a tooltip-free experience!

Just to add, I'm still getting popups in the search and replace fields, but of course that's to be expected.

I don't find these particularly useful either, so I wonder if there's any way to disable these using qss as well

@Becky, any idea?

One of the reasons I put my (frequently used) toolbars (when possible) on the Right edge. Less motion from the mouse park .
(I'm a righty)

@KarlG
This is an important functionality of Sigil – the history of the Find and Replace fields. However, if you really want to hide it, your choice.
I hope you remember the built-in option to clear this history by "Clear Find Replace History" from the context menu.

Here code:
Code:
QFrame QComboBox QAbstractItemView::item {max-height: 0;}

This doesn't seem to work. I assume this should also be in qt_styles.qss right?

I cleared the history and made a couple of new searches, but as you can see they are still showing in the popup.
