Books via ADE portable??

If I download books to one PC using Adobe Digital Editions, can I then transport them to another PC (that doesn't have ADE) and let Calibre deal with them on that PC? If so, any special actions needed?

Thanks!

Not unless you "liberate" them first. ADE DRM restricts the downloaded book to the device from which it was downloaded.

This really should be in the appropriate ebook format forum.

S, I don't understand your response. The downloaded ebook was NOT downloaded from a device but from an ebook provider.

Also, what do you mean when you say "liberate them first".

The vast majority of book sellers lace their products with DRM (Digital Rights Management) protections. This keeps you from making copies of the book and putting it on any device you want. So IF the book has Adobe DRM then you will have the have any other device you want to put it on authorized by Adobe.... By liberate the poster was referring to the process of removing the DRM, a subject not tolerated on the forum because of legal issues.

If the books do not have DRM (highly unlikely) then you can use them anyway you want, just like you own them.

The process of downloading "from an ebook provider" will involve downloading via some type of device - ereader, computer, phone, etc. All of these methods will more than likely involve some form of DRM (Digital Rights Mangement) which will restrict transferring or copying the downloaded file to any other device.

"Liberating" is a term used to relieve such files of DRM but assistance to do so is not allowed here.

Most Adobe ebooks have DRM (encryption), but are still readable on up to 6 PCs and 6 devices (such as a dedicated ebook reader). The limitation is that all need to be authorized to the same AdobeID, and you need to read them using Adobe provided or licensed software.

If you remove the DRM, then these limitations go away. This is probably legal in the US for personal use of ebooks you bought. See Adobe ADEPT DRM for EPUB circumvented (Adobe PDFs are also circumventable with a similar script from the same source). Be sure to read the blog comments for the latest news.

Thanks!
I'm learning also, so more experienced members please let me know if I understand this correctly.

I believe the simple answer to petercreasey's question is no.
  • Calibre only works with converts books that do not have DRM. Edit: added -> You can use Calibre as a library for all your books (DRM and nonDRM).

ADE books are restricted (they have DRM).
Sony book store books have DRM.
  • Your Sony Reader Library and ADE work with the exact same log in and password.

Your Sony Reader is authorized to the Reader Library and ADE.

You can install Reader Library and ADE on the other computer (make sure to use the same log in and password as the other computer) and authorize that computer, if you want to have your books on that computer also.

EDIT: Question for Calibre users.. Is the below true?

It is probably best not to run Calibre and Sony Reader Library at the same time.

Liberating / removing DRM requires some skill (although once it is set up and you have done it for a while, it apparently is pretty easy) I haven't tried it as of yet.

I hope some of that information helped. I'm sure some experienced members will let us know if something was not correct.

D etal, Okay, so if I downloaded an ebook using ADE, I can then transport that ebook to another PC and use Sony Reader on that 2nd PC to send the ebook to my Sony eReader. Is this right?

If this is possible, do I just <copy> <paste> the ebook into the Sony Reader library folder on the 2nd PC and it will work?

Thanks for any info!

I only have the one laptop, now (My desktops died and the other laptop is next), so I'm not sure as I can't test this. I'm asking for help and info to understand this. So, I haven't forgotten you, I just have to wait to get the information to answer your question.

ADE doesn't remove the DRM. For this reason, the copy/paste trick works only if all the devices and reader installations involved are registered with the same ADE account. If they are not, then you are out of luck. Note that there is a limit to the number of computers & readers that can be associated with an ADE account (6, I think).

This ADE (and Amazon and B&N and Mobipocket) DRM nonsense has led me only to purchase books that I can liberate from their DRM prison. Thank goodness for publishers like Baen, who supply DRM-free books from the get-go.

C, The 2nd PC does not have the ADE installed. This is why I was hoping I could use the Sony Reader to send the ebook to the Sony 505 (which is authorized on both PCs).

You are saying I cannot do this because the 2nd PC doesn't have ADE...right?

Thanks!

The simple answer is yes. Your Sony 505 has to be Authorized for Adobe DRM protected content, which is shown on the about screen. I have used Calibre to manage DRM protected epubs and send them to my authorized reader.

Agreeing with dwanthny: yes, as long as both readers are associated with the same ADE account.

I'm sorry but I still don't understand.

The 2nd PC does not have the ADE installed. I was hoping I could use the Sony Reader on this 2nd PC to send the ebook to the Sony 505 (which is authorized by Sony Reader on both PCs).

Is this possible?
