Tolino has updated their whole lineup now

Shine 3 (still the Clara clone) — Vision 5, now a Libra clone — Epos2, now a Forma clone. And Page (looks like an Aura 2 clone but comes with 8GB instead of 4GB).

Looks like they're still using the Tolino firmware. So, based on Android instead of Linux and much more "sparse."

I'm always disconcerted when I see an ebook company - when giving us a reading experience on an ebook reader - shows text without ANY spaces between paragraphs IN ADDITION to showing no indentation whatsoever on those paragraphs.

But what the heigh-hoooo!
That's just me,
and maybe not youuuu!

That seems to be a result of German book formatting. Tolinos display English eBooks the same as other eReaders.

My biggest issue with the tolino firmware is the way it runs roughshod over css.

If you have a book with extra fonts for headings or initials, you have to stick to the body font the reader provides by default - try and change the body font, and all the extra fonts are changed to that as well.

Same as text-alignment: If you change that, to justified, say, everything in the book will now be displayed justified, also what should be centered, right-aligned or left-aligned.

Very annoying.

Not rebranded Kobos. Same hardware, but not the same firmware. You can actually buy a Tolino Shine 3 from Grooves.Land, shipped to U.S., for a little less than the Kobo Clara.

That's the formatting of those specific eBooks. It's a terrible format. It makes the eBooks very difficult to read.

German announcements for the three new Tolinos (looks like they're just mostly rehashing the specs)...

Page 2 — https://www.computerbild.de/artikel/...-24252173.html

Vision 5 — https://www.computerbild.de/artikel/...-24252635.html

Epos 2 — https://www.computerbild.de/artikel/...-24256067.html

(I have to use Google translate to understand these.)

Sounds to me like a typiclal Android eBook reading app. But to be honest, there's no excuse for this supplying such shoddy software. Do you think Kobo firmware could be loaded?

And then to charge more for less is not good.

Nit-pick: none of these are "based on" Linux. All Kobo devices, including Kobo's tolino-branded devices, run a full Linux kernel, not a derivative. So do Kindle devices for that matter. But not iPhone and iPad; these run a Mach + FreeBSD fusion called XNU. Kindle Fire devices run an os that is based on Android. Still have a full Linux kernel at the core but what sits above is a derivative of Google's AOSP sources.

Unknown if tolino firmware can be installed on Kobo-branded hardware or if Kobo firmware can be installed on tolino-branded hardware. They're the same hardware but the IPL code may be different.
