I had a terrible (great) month, with 14 new purchases, and only 4 books read. Which would have been 2 had I not thrown in a couple of quick Poirots a week or so back.
For some reason, my "main" books have just been quite slow-paced. I'm struggling to read 20 pages at a sitting with my current book, and it's 450 pages long. I like it; it's just not a page-turner. |

I've been alternating my addictions by reading chapters in between DVDs of House. I'm still knocking stuff off of my big stack, but at a slower pace. Unfortunately, my progress on my challenge stack has kind of stalled out, as I've put it on hold while I finish the current nine-book saga. (I'd read books 1-4 last year, and started #5 when #9 came in recently. I'm almost done with #8 now.)
Once I finish the saga, I'll either tackle the challenge stack again or take on a couple of my new acquisitions. Could go either way; I like Simon R. Green, so I could dive right into Casino Infernale, or I could hold off until his next book comes out in late August and read 'em back-to-back. Been doing that quite a bit lately... |

I'm down to ten years to go now for challenge. Time to start coasting to my required reading finish line and read a few other things I hadn't penciled in at the beginning of the year.

My beginning of the year predictions have come true so far. I was able to get a fair amount ahead of my goal by the end of March, but am not right on track again due to a couple week trip at the end of April/beginning of May. Hopefully I can get ahead again before the next interruption to my reading in mid July.

I haven't quite reached a third of my goal yet so I'm a bit behind. I'm excusing myself though as I have read different genres and some classics - it hasn't all been chicklit!

Well, I'm managing so far to be ahead of my quota. The one rather short selection ("Slow Life") is balanced by the enormous The Conquest of the Incas, so I feel that the total "read book" list is fair. If I go over my quota, I'll increase it by 10 for the next year.

I am basically not going to make it this year so I am looking at the number of pages I have read so far this year and its a rather impressive number. Going to redo my ticker based on the number of pages read.

I'm a little over halfway in my book count, so I'm doing okay so far. Problem is, I'm letting everything else slide.

I'm doing surprisingly well in my sub-challenges, and pretty badly in my main challenge.
I have very nearly finished all the Hugo winners. I'm on the last one right now. My Women of Genre Fiction challenge is right on schedule. I've been sticking to one a month for this. I only set a target of 1 of the BSFA winners, and it was actually a gimme through the Women of Genre Fiction, so I've technically completed that one, too, although I'm definitely planning to read at least one more winner this year - the 2013 winner, Jack Glass by Adam Roberts, which has also just won the John W Campbell Memorial Award. I had kind of let my ABC Murders challenge slip to concentrate on the Hugos, but in fact I've pulled that back to be right on schedule, too. I was aiming for 8 this year, and I've just finished the 4th. The only problem is that I've acquired 91 books, and only read 26 (and removed a further 2), so my TBR is still heading rapidly in the wrong direction. It's bit like failing a diet by eating lots of cake. Yes, you've failed the diet, but on the other hand you have cake. |
