Nightmare At 20,000 Feet: Horror Stories by Richard Matheson is $2.99 at Amazon US.

The Amazon page says this collection also includes Duel, the basis for the excellent Spielberg film. But it does not. That story is included in Duel: Terror Stories by Richard Matheson (not currently on sale).

Quote:
Remember that monster on the wing of the airplane? William Shatner saw it on The Twilight Zone, John Lithgow saw it in the movie-even Bart Simpson saw it. "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" is just one of many classic horror stories by Richard Matheson that have insinuated themselves into our collective imagination.

Here are more than twenty of Matheson's most memorable tales of fear and paranoia, including:

"Prey," in which a terrified woman is stalked by a malevolent Tiki doll, as chillingly captured in yet another legendary TV moment;

"Blood Son," a disturbing portrait of a strange little boy who dreams of being a vampire;

"Dress of White Silk," a seductively sinister tale of evil and innocence.

The Scarlet Gospels by Clive Barker is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Harry D'Amour vs. the Cenobites. Weird.

Quote:
The Scarlet Gospels takes readers back many years to the early days of two of Barker's most iconic characters in a battle of good and evil as old as time: The long-beleaguered detective Harry D'Amour, investigator of all supernatural, magical, and malevolent crimes faces off against his formidable, and intensely evil rival, Pinhead, the priest of hell. Barker devotees have been waiting for The Scarlet Gospels with bated breath for years, and it's everything they've begged for and more. Bloody, terrifying, and brilliantly complex, fans and newcomers alike will not be disappointed by the epic, visionary tale that is The Scarlet Gospels. Barker's horror will make your worst nightmares seem like bedtime stories. The Gospels are coming. Are you ready?

Echo by Thomas Olde Heuvelt is $2.99 at Amazon US. ($2.99 seems to be the new go-to sale price for big five books)

Quote:
From international bestselling sensation Thomas Olde Heuvelt comes Echo, a thrilling descent into madness and obsession as one man confronts nature—and something even more ancient and evil answers back.

Travel journalist and mountaineer Nick Grevers awakes from a coma to find that his climbing buddy, Augustin, is missing and presumed dead. Nick’s own injuries are as extensive as they are horrifying. His face wrapped in bandages and unable to speak, Nick claims amnesia—but he remembers everything.

He remembers how he and Augustin were mysteriously drawn to the Maudit, a remote and scarcely documented peak in the Swiss Alps.

He remembers how the slopes of Maudit were eerily quiet, and how, when they entered its valley, they got the ominous sense that they were not alone.

He remembers: something was waiting for them...

But it isn’t just the memory of the accident that haunts Nick. Something has awakened inside of him, something that endangers the lives of everyone around him…

It’s one thing to lose your life. It’s another to lose your soul.

The Keeper by Boris Bacic is $0.99 at Amazon US. Lighthouses, man.

Quote:
His predecessor vanished without a trace - and he may be next.

Jeremy takes a job as keeper of a lighthouse reputed to be haunted. In the aftermath of trauma, he's seeking solitude and an escape, and the six-month stint at the lighthouse seems like an answer to prayers. After all, ghosts aren't real.

But his beliefs are put to the test when he begins to suspect he's not alone. The lighthouse loses power. Doors open and slam shut on their own. Objects disappear, only to reappear in different locations. Most eerie are the handprints staining the windows - windows fifty feet up in the air.

Isolated and trapped, he's on his own to survive attacks growing aggressive by the hour. Is Jeremy losing his mind, dealing with a stalker, or was he wrong to dismiss the rumors of a ghost on the premises? And whoever or whatever it is, will it let him live to tell about it?

Four Octobers by Rick Hautala is $0.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
The days are getting shorter, and the wind blows cold from the north. After
the maple and oak leaves turn from green to bright reds, golds, and oranges,
they wither, fall, and die, clattering like old bones as they blow down the
street in the twilight. The sun isn't as bright as it used to be, and the
nights are dark and cold and long. This is the time of the harvest the
time of Hallowe'en and a time for reminiscences of the summer just past
and of other summers, now long gone. This is a time of mystery and
expectation as the earth prepares for the frigid onslaught of winter.

Four Octobers collects for the first time four loosely interconnected
novellas from the vivid imagination of best-selling author Rick Hautala.
Each story is set in October, the month of pumpkins and trick or treat, of
skeletons and haunted graveyards, and each story is filled with nostalgia
for times past for summers and youth now gone for chances not taken
for opportunities now lost forever.

"Tin Can Telephone," set in 1957, tells the story of a young boy and his
friend who, in the pre-dawn darkness while waiting to see the Russian
satellite Sputnik speed by overhead, experience a mystery and fear far more
terrifying than the threat of Soviets in space.

"Miss Henry's Bottles," perhaps Hautala's best story to date, tells how the
simple act of discarding two empty soda bottles on a neighbor's lawn brings
to light secrets that should have remained buried but like all secrets,
this one eventually is revealed with devastating consequences.

"Blood Ledge," set in an Indian Summer of 1971, tells the tale of a young
boy who discovers a dark family secret that leads him to accept a family
inheritance that has horrifying results.

And finally, "Cold River" is the story of a man so lost in loneliness and
depression following the death of his wife that he faces a horror worse
much worse than drowning in the cold, dark river that flows by his house.

Taken together, these stories show Rick Hautala writing at the top of his
game, telling stories that will not only chill you when you read them, but
will leave you with an icy dread in your heart a dread much colder than
any October wind blowing down the street at night.

X the Unknown by Shaun Hutson is $0.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
In a quiet field in Buckinghamshire, a huge crack has appeared in the earth's surface. And people are dying. Incinerated beyond recognition. At the same time, hospitals have noticed an increase in catastrophic deformities in foetuses, and cancer levels soaring.

Dr Adam Royston, a scientist working at the nearby military base, thinks he knows what it is; a creature as old as the earth that slumbers for centuries, then wakes to feed on the energy and radiation produced by humans. But if he's right, and they can't find a way to destroy the creature roaming the countryside, then it's not just Buckinghamshire that could be in danger, but the whole world.

Yeah, I picked up The Headsman by James Neal Harvey for $0.25. I read it years ago and remember feeling it was like an Italian Giallo in book form with a slasher, psychic powers and a possible supernatural threat.

Of course, the new cover doesn't compare to my paperback:

The old cover is so much nicer than the new cover, which makes me think I stepped into a car commercial.

Here's one of those $0.25 deals. (I have the old cover below.)

Awwwww! That's so cute to see a teddy bear chopping a rat in half.

But who chopped off the teddy bear's head? Poor little teddy bear.

I (foolishly!) bought the book before the $0.25 price. And of course, slapped that teddy bear cover on my copy.

Jago by Kim Newman is $1.99 at Amazon US.

I know about Kim, but the only work of his I've yet read is the fun Orgy of the Blood Parasites (which is not available as an ebook, last I checked).

Quote:
The residents of a sleepy English village are dreaming—and their nightmares are turning into realities—in this “brilliantly nasty” horror novel from the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Anno Dracula (Sunday Telegraph)

Paul, a young academic composing a thesis about the end of the world, and his girlfriend have come to the tiny English village of Alder for the summer. Their idea of a rural retreat gradually sours as the laws of nature begin to break down around them . . .

It would appear that the annual rock music festival held by the bizarre Agapemone sect is the only thing shattering the peace of Alder. But as the temperature rises, it becomes clear that the tiny village may not be the Heaven on Earth that their leader, Reverend Anthony Jago, is trying to create. Residents’ nightmares are coming true—unleashing creatures from local legend, science fiction, and the dark side of the human mind upon the town.
