Thumbs up Free (DRM-free) Hot off the Presses [LGBT 1996 Olympics Literary Political Drama]

Hot of the Presses by Lambda Literary Award finalist Elliott Mackle is his period-set literary fiction political and personal drama novel with suspense and m/m romantic elements (apparently somewhat steamy, according to the customer reviews) starring a gay journalist investigating a number of complicated and controversial related issues in the lead-up to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and thereby also exploring the realities and difficulties of life for LGBT persons in the US Deep South at the time, as well as ethical issues within the journalistic and athletic communities and his own balance between covering public and private lives, free courtesy of LGBT specialty publisher Lethe Press (Wikipedia).

Apparently, this is based upon the author's own real-life experiences as a journalist covering said Olympics, as well as a gay man.

Currently free (and DRM-free) @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK, and pretty much everywhere else that Amazon sells, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program).

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because it's not often that we get political drama novels, so bonus points for novelty value. And this looks like an interesting one retroactively exploring a relatively uncommon setting and subject matter within living history, written by an award-nominated author who's really and truly writing what he knows.

Enjoy!

Description
As editor of a gay newspaper, Henry Thompson thought he had enough problems dealing with the conservative, old-money owners and the cor-rupt mayor of Atlanta—an evangelical clergyman who denies that African-American men are at risk with AIDS and sees no benefit in accepting federal safe-sex-education funds just months before welcoming the world for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games.

Henry lost his lover to AIDS and sees the casual sex happening in the community as almost criminal and certainly lethal. He relies on a good friend’s skilled Tantric massages to release the tension in his life and raise his spirits. Then, while taking in a good, voyeuristic sweat at a men’s-club steam room, Henry finds himself in a tryst with a handsome local athlete.

What happens to a crusading journalist when he finds himself falling for a closeted gymnast favored to win gold medals at the upcoming Olympics? When CNN and Sports Illustrated hound him in their never-ending demand for sensationalism that threatens careers? Henry must find the answer to moral dilemmas: integrity versus propriety; passion versus restraint.

Author Elliott Mackle, himself a former journalist, offers readers a glimpse back to a remarkable era and events in the life of the Gay South.
