To be fair, the EU does a lot of sensible things, too. The abolition of roaming charges for voice and data across the EU from 2017 is a good thing.

The EU also added VAT to eBooks which is a really stupid idea. I think the EU is living with their heads firmly placed up their backsides.

Books have always been subject to VAT. Are you perhaps referring to the fact that paper books can attract a lower rate of VAT than ebooks?

You pay taxes on ebooks in the US as well. It depends where you buy them from and where you are located. Ever since Amazon collects sales tax from me, they also collect tax for (some) ebooks.

And in some states, even if Amazon don't charge you sales tax, you are still required to pay "Use Tax" (an amount equal to the sales tax you would have paid, had it been charged) on them.

So, yes it was a good plan but the EU appear to be doing their up-most to make it completely useless. |

Yes, right. That is why I specifically said that Amazon collects the tax now in many states (maybe all ?) that was already owed by the buyer to the state. Realistically almost nobody would pay their tax debt, so now it is up to the seller to enforce it by collecting it and then in turn pay it to the state in the buyers stead.

I posted this story to my Facebook page when it first came out along with these words: "Take a good look, folks. You are witness to history today. Grab your cameras. This is as high as absurdity gets."

"Günther Oettinger and Martin Schulz" sounds like the name of a comedy team. Which would explain a lot.

Schulz isn't really funny, Oettinger on the other hand is a brilliant solo act:
(In the bit in German at the beginning he explains, how everybody, even simple workers, must be able to speak English...) |
