One group (agency) setting the price for everyone, the retailers not having the freedom to set their own price, seems more communist then capitalist to me. Yes, I admit, that is a bit of a stretch. The creator of the work has every right to set whatever price they want but once the retailer pays that price they in turn should have the same right, be it selling it at a markup or at a loss...

I suppose one could call the publisher the creator of the work; I'd reserve that term for the author, myself. And the author is not setting the ebook price under the agency model.

While I think the Atlas Shrugged price is ridiculous apparently plenty of folks are willing to pay it as it's in the top 100 paid Kindle books (#57) right now.
Back in the day I paid $8.67 for my copy and got a 100% micropay rebate from Fictionwise. Those were the days. |

Here are links to the same two books at the much better priced Sony epub store: Atlas Shrugged. The Fountainhead Darned if those prices don't look vaguely familiar. |

Need to get the environmental groups on board. E-books are eco friendly. No trees cut down.
Only half joking. |

Some big companies ganging up to milk the public for what it's worth? That's very capitalist. It is the state that is essential for maintaining the market with anti-trust and fair competition laws.
Perhaps you should just get Ayn Rand's attitude, shrug off what is holding you back and get her book from the darknet. Alan Greenspan was her happy follower and didn't we all get a massive bill to pay for his policies. |

True but also then no need for the plantations of trees that are specifically grown for making paper and replanted as harvested... now how eco-friendly is that?
