PRS-600 Display

Hi,
I don't know whether this question has already been posted, but I'll give it a try.
Is there a way to change the brightness and/or the background color in the PRS-600?
My eyes get really tired after reading for a while, and I would prefer a background nearer to white than the grey one.
I can't read longer than 15 minutes before my eyes start start to sting.
I don't have this problem with my iPhone and iTouch.
I'm really starting to regret having bought the Sony, so I'll be grateful for any help.

You cannot change the brightness of eInk readers. The 600 has a display that is less readable and has more glare than the 505 or 300 as it utilizes the touch layer for navigation. The touch layer is some kind of a plastic layer which sits right above the eInk display.
The 505 and 300 don't have such a layer. Navigation is by buttons only.
I've read that readability of the 900 is supposed to be better than on the 600 allthough the 900 has a similar touch layer like the 600.

If you still can return the 600, go out and try the 900 if you look for the same functionality or for the 300 if you just look for book reading and can omit some of the 600s functions. Most of us who own and love the 600 like the device mostly because of the functionality, most times not bothering with the drawbacks you have to deal with.

I hope I could be of a little assistance.

Maybe you need to increase the font size?

You also need to use it in good lighting. The touchscreen is between your eyes and the words and that's why it's a tad dimmer. Change your font to Medium at least and get a light at about 50-60 degree angle and it looks much better.

Until you get used to the "gray" - you might want to try using an LED reading light, such as one in the "Mighty Bright" series. The color temperature of these lights really brightens the PRS-600's screen. At first I thought I would be relying on the light for most non-daylight reading situations, but discovered I got accustomed to the gray to the point where it doesn't bother me so much any more. I still use my Mighty Bright in the dark, however .

Thanks for the help.
I've tried changing font sizes, but that didn't help much.
I'll give the LED reading light a try. I've checked their website and they sound really good.
2thumbsup

I usually change my reader's position according to where the light source is. It can be tricky but there's certain angles where the light really makes the screen quite clear. For me, the best spot is to read with a strong light somewhere behind me or somewhere above my head. It can be hard to read with the light source in front of me.

I absolutely confirm this one. Changing angles also helps, like stated above.
