Regarding the Alex Delaware series we were discussing, it had been a while since I read some of those and I didn't remember large amounts of gore. However, I just read the recent book in this series "Museum of Desire" and while it is not as bad as those really gory thrillers the OP hates, it may have more than he would like.

I've not read any of the books, but I have watched the entire Inspector Morse TV series which I found to be excellent.
So I can recommend the Inspector Morse books by Colin Dexter. |
