Dun Lady's Jess by Doranna Durgin (ISFDB, Wikipedia) is the 1st in her Changespell Saga more-or-less around the quest to thwart rogue wizards who go around around shapechanging animals into people for exploitative reasons, starring the titular heroine who is herself a horse-turned-woman who must learn to cope with her new form and feelings, free courtesy of the author herself via her own Blue Hound Visions imprint, who is e-printing it from its 1994 Baen edition.

This was the 1995 Compton Crook Award winner for Best First Novel, and we've previously received a prequel novel free, if you wish to start reading with that (it was written much later, though): Barrenlands

Because it's always awesometastic to get another sfnal backlist offering from an author who's always been very generous with the freebies and the Read an Ebook Week sale discounts, and an award-winning one as well. It's a shame that I've never really been able to get into her writing myself, but maybe this will be the one that finally grabs me, and hopefully a lot of other Gentle Readers will be able to enjoy it as well.
