Kafka, Franz: The Trial, v.1, 11 Nov 2007.
Franz Kafka: The Trial (Der Process)
(1925) “Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., he knew he had done nothing wrong but, one morning, he was arrested.” So begins Kafka’s nightmarish story. Thanks for formatting this.
PS. I will say I do not particularly care for Wyllie's translation. I've read the first 50 or so pages in German as well, and most of the jokes just seem to get lost in his translation, specifically because Wyllie translates away most of the dryness of the German sentences, often introducing connectives where in the original there are none (so as to make the translation smooth where the original intentionally isn't). I would suggest reading the translation by Breon Mitchell, as it seems to capture Kafka's tone rather better. |

You may well be right, zerospinboson, though I'm not qualified to say. However, the Wyllie translation does have the merit of being freely available, thanks to the translator's generosity.

I found it worth mentioning, however, because the translation is so recent, and the current trend in translating appears to be trying to get as close to the original as possible. Last edited by zerospinboson; 09-24-2009 at 02:48 AM. |
