by Andrew Ross Sorkin is $1.99 at U. S. stores Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003X...4367376&sr=8-2 Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/too...and-themselves Below is the blurb: Brand New for 2018: an updated edition featuring a new afterword to mark the 10th anniversary of the financial crisis The brilliantly reported New York Times bestseller that goes behind the scenes of the financial crisis on Wall Street and in Washington to give the definitive account of the crisis, the basis for the HBO film “Too Big To Fail is too good to put down. . . . It is the story of the actors in the most extraordinary financial spectacle in 80 years, and it is told brilliantly.” —The Economist In one of the most gripping financial narratives in decades, Andrew Ross Sorkin—a New York Times columnist and one of the country's most respected financial reporters—delivers the first definitive blow-by-blow account of the epochal economic crisis that brought the world to the brink. Apologies for repetitive post, but authors are providing free books through Smashwords for people self-isolating. I know SW isn't popular with the mods but Amazon has limited flexibility and some good authors also sell on Smashwords. Any I recommend I have read and enjoyed. I'm only posting personal recommendations made free that aren't usually.
In this category: Echoes of Ganesha: An Ancient God in a Modern Western World by Jaq D. Hawkins https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/939203 |

The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945
by Rick Atkinson is $1.99 at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Guns-Last-Lig...sr=1-1-catcorr Below is the blurb: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The magnificent conclusion to Rick Atkinson's acclaimed Liberation Trilogy about the Allied triumph in Europe during World War II It is the twentieth century's unrivaled epic: at a staggering price, the United States and its allies liberated Europe and vanquished Hitler. In the first two volumes of his bestselling Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson recounted how the American-led coalition fought through North Africa and Italy to the threshold of victory. Now, in The Guns at Last Light, he tells the most dramatic story of all—the titanic battle for Western Europe. D-Day marked the commencement of the final campaign of the European war, and Atkinson's riveting account of that bold gamble sets the pace for the masterly narrative that follows. The brutal fight in Normandy, the liberation of Paris, the disaster that was Operation Market Garden, the horrific Battle of the Bulge, and finally the thrust to the heart of the Third Reich—all these historic events and more come alive with a wealth of new material and a mesmerizing cast of characters. Atkinson tells the tale from the perspective of participants at every level, from presidents and generals to war-weary lieutenants and terrified teenage riflemen. When Germany at last surrenders, we understand anew both the devastating cost of this global conflagration and the enormous effort required to win the Allied victory. With the stirring final volume of this monumental trilogy, Atkinson's accomplishment is manifest. He has produced the definitive chronicle of the war that unshackled a continent and preserved freedom in the West. Upheaval is Jared Diamond's latest (I'm pretty sure) book, and it has dropped to $3.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Diamond is one of the few authors that I'll pay full price or nearly full price for their titles, but in this case, I was lucky enough to be able to borrow it from my library without too outrageous of a wait time (the library had bought a lot of copies...). You may recognize him as the author of Guns, Germs and Steel; and/or Collapse; and he also has written several lesser-known books as well.
Anyway, I enjoyed Upheaval enough to buy it now that it is on sale - Diamond is also one of the few non-fiction authors that I like to reread. And it seems particularly timely now too - sigh! Uncanny Valley by Anna Wiener is on sale for $3.99 at amazon US through May 3.
https://www.amazon.com/Uncanny-Valle...dp/B07QYHLP97/ It is also currently a Great on Kindle book and promises a time limited discount on your next Great on Kindle book. I assume if you have any Great on Kindle credits, you can apply them to purchasing this book. It is a newish book published in January and got some buzz and sold well. It is a memoir of a 20-something NYC publishing house intern that landed in Silicon Valley during one of its booms. Reviews are mixed. I checked out the p-book from my library because I had no idea whether I would like it or not. It is a shortish quickish easy read and is reasonably well written. I didn't understand many of the cultural/social references, but I assume that is on me, and it didn't really detract that much from the reading experience. Since it also presents a perspective of technical startup culture in several companies from the viewpoint of an intelligent articulate outsider, I also found it useful. I do think there was some misinterpretation of decades old west coast technology development culture as somehow being the invention of recent web and mobile software startups. (By technology, I mean all developing technologies, not the stupid extremely narrow current usage of the word technology.) |

The Smartest Guys in the Room by Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind is on sale (today only, I think) at amazon.com for $1.99
https://www.amazon.com/Smartest-Guys...dp/B00EOAS0EK/ Bethany McLean was one of the first to cast doubts on Enron with her March 2001 Fortune article Is Enron Overpriced? I haven't read the book, but I have seen the documentary based on it, which I found excellent. |
