For fans of the John Jordan series by Michael Lister, many of the titles have dropped to $0.99 each at Kindle US (not at Kindle UK, at least as of now). I spot checked a few, and these appear to be Countdown deals, good for a bit more than 5 more days.

I'm crunched at work, so no individual list - here's a link to the series list, and you can check for yourself if you want/need some of these titles:

Amazon US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...kindle_edition
Amazon US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...kindle_edition

Titles in this series go on sale pretty often (sometimes free), and there are also some collections out there that don't appear on the series list, so check carefully before you buy.

Death of a Ghost is the sixth in the Albert Campion series by Margery Allingham. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 1/2 more day. There is an omnibus that contains this title that has been on sale before, so check carefully before you buy.

John Sebastian Lafcadio’s ambition to be known as the greatest painter since Rembrandt was not to be thwarted by a matter as trifling as his own death.

A set of twelve sealed paintings is left in the hands of his widow, together with the instruction that she unveil one canvas each year before a carefully selected audience.

Albert Campion is invited to join a cast of gadabouts, muses, and socialites to witness the eighth unveiling but they are treated instead to a murder. The lights go down, and a young man is stabbed to death.

Campion must get to work on the baffling case, with its long - suspiciously long - line-up of possible killers and soon finds himself having to face his dearest enemy...

Cool, this one is sitting near the top of my TBR pile right now!

I quite like the Russell/Holmes books, especially since some of them tend to be more "Great Game" style books, sort of like the Conan Doyle ones where Holmes helps out the British government. And, I've really enjoyed reading a lot of history of that period, so I like mysteries set then too. (I think I started being interested in it with Kipling's Kim, and then I read Peter Hopkirk's Quest for Kim: In Search of Kipling's Great Game, and then I read more of Hopkirk's other "straight" history books, and then I was hooked on the period/region. And of course, one of the titles in King's Russell/Holmes series is called just The Game and ties in with Kim...)

James M. Cain, virtuoso of the roman noir, gives us a tautly narrated and excruciatingly suspenseful story in Double Indemnity, an X-ray view of guilt, of duplicity, and of the kind of obsessive, loveless love that devastates everything it touches.

Walter Huff was an insurance salesman with an unfailing instinct for clients who might be in trouble, and his instinct led him to Phyllis Nirdlinger. Phyllis wanted to buy an accident policy on her husband. Then she wanted her husband to have an accident. Walter wanted Phyllis. To get her, he would arrange the perfect murder and betray everything he had ever lived for.

Murder in the Queen's Boudoir is the eleventh and most recent (2000) in the Auguste Didier series by Amy Myers. It is free right now at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LX0QJZ9
Kobo US: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01LX0QJZ9

Spoiler:
Quote:
Auguste Didier is back. But this time, he’s chasing ghosts…

It seemed a wonderful idea at the beginning: a staged scene to tempt the ghost of tragic Marie Antoinette into showing herself at Le Petit Trianon .

And what better way to do so but to recreate a day in her life?

Surely no self-respecting ghost would be able to resist?

Although for that matter, neither would a woman with revenge in her heart, nor a man with a weakness for a wager…

There have been several reported sightings at Le Petit Trianon over the years and, on the fateful day, no fewer than three Marie-Antoinettes are seen.

But the dead body found in the late queen’s bed-chamber after lunch is no illusion – and nor is the second body found slaughtered in the garden.

Could the two deaths be connected?

With everyone under suspicion, Auguste Didier, takes it upon himself to shelve his role as the king’s chef to help an acquaintance, Inspector Chesnais.

However, Auguste’s history throws little confidence in his direction.

Chesnais is tasked with investigating the crimes, but Auguste has his own plans …

With his wife Tatiana’s help, Auguste focuses on the group.

Someone amongst them is a murderer…

Murder in the Queen’s Boudoir is a classic murder mystery, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie.

A rare price drop on an Open Road title in the UK...

The Return of Lanny Budd is the eleventh and last in the Lanny Budd series by Upton Sinclair. It has dropped to £1.99 at Kindle UK. This is more of a thriller than a mystery, and definitely has a political aspect to it, so YMMV.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B018V77HRW
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B018V77HRW

Spoiler:
Quote:
Presidential secret agent Lanny Budd is called back into action in post-war Germany as the Cold War begins

Since the age of thirteen, Lanny Budd has been more than an eyewitness to history. From the Paris Peace Conference to the Battle of the Bulge, he has played key roles in the extraordinary events of his age. Now, forty years later, Presidential Agent 103 is coming out of retirement to serve his country—and the free world—once more.

A counterfeiting conspiracy hatched by unrepentant neo-Nazis threatens to gravely damage America’s efforts to rebuild and stabilize a divided Germany. Lanny’s previous experience, as well as his unexpected connection to one of the chief conspirators, makes him the ideal operative to foil the sinister plot. But when he infiltrates the Russian-controlled sector, what Lanny sees makes his blood run cold. Communist leader and former US ally Joseph Stalin has twisted the socialist ideals he holds dear into weapons of tyranny, oppression, and terror. With the onset of a shadow war between two world superpowers, Lanny realizes that his mission is far from over.

The Return of Lanny Budd is the final volume of Upton Sinclair’s Pulitzer Prize–winning dramatization of twentieth-century world history. A thrilling mix of adventure, romance, and political intrigue, the Lanny Budd Novels are a testament to the breathtaking scope of the author’s vision and his singular talents as a storyteller.

Although it's morphed over time IMO into more of a military/political/intrigue-ish historical series than a historical mystery series, I still enjoy Simon Scarrow's Cato and Macro/Eagles series, and the books still usually have some dead bodies hanging around .

So I'm cross-posting to the Other Fiction thread for the eighteenth and most recent (for a few more weeks) in that series, Traitors of Rome, which is £0.99 today as part of the UK Kindle Daily Deal.

Although it sounds to me as if it should be in her Magic Men series, The Lantern Men is actually the most recent (2020) in Elly Griffiths' Dr. Ruth Galloway series. It has dropped to £0.99 as part of today's UK Kindle Daily Deal. I love it when the UK Daily Deal puts a most-recent-in-a-major-series title on sale at £0.99. This almost never happens in the US, where even if they do go on sale, it's many months later and never this inexpensive.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lantern-Men...dp/B07P8S9J7C/
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Lantern-M...dp/B07P8S9J7C/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Everything has changed for Dr Ruth Galloway.

She has a new job, home and partner, and is no longer North Norfolk police's resident forensic archaeologist. That is, until convicted murderer Ivor March offers to make DCI Nelson a deal. Nelson was always sure that March killed more women than he was charged with. Now March confirms this, and offers to show Nelson where the other bodies are buried - but only if Ruth will do the digging.

Curious, but wary, Ruth agrees. March tells Ruth that he killed four more women and that their bodies are buried near a village bordering the fens, said to be haunted by the Lantern Men, mysterious figures holding lights that lure travellers to their deaths.

Is Ivor March himself a lantern man, luring Ruth back to Norfolk? What is his plan, and why is she so crucial to it? And are the killings really over?
