Try to long press the power button for almost a minute. It should work (IIRC it worked on a PW1)

No, there isn't on at least a PW3, DXG and older Basics and Kindle Keyboard. The apparent power off is merely a blank screen. The old Binatones, Sony PRS, some others and Kobo Touch, H2O, Libra etc do turn off.
The Kindles thus will need charged occasionally if unused. Maybe once a month. They may really turn off when the battery flat warning screen appears, but I'm not sure. Certainly then the clock is wrong. The Kobo, Sony and Binatone obviously keep the clock running, but that's miniscule current. Even the original IBM AT clock might have run for 5 years on a set of AA Alkaline cells, though often an NiCd pack was used till they changed to coin Cells. The fat CMOS clock/settings module, often Odin Brand had the Lithium coin cell encapsulated and died after about 10 years. I've filed off the connections to that and glued a CR2032 holder to get old PCs going in the past. Some won't even go to setup screen if the battery is flat. If the screen is off, which is one of the choices that appear when you hold the power button for 5-10 seconds, what would still be "on"? They aren't like a computer or phone doing stuff in the background.
Put it in airplane mode, turn the screen off, and the device is off. |

I'm not talking about the "white screen of sleep", that happens when you press the power button a few seconds.
The hardware has means to reboot if software is left in broken state. To force a reboot you do: 1. press for 15 - 20 seconds 2. release the power button just a sec 3. press again a few seconds. That will force a full reboot even on a kernel deadlock. The same procedure, without releasing the power button, will eventually trigger a poweroff (or a reboot if something changed on the PMIC side) I do remember that, because when I got my PW1 I soldered a TTL adapter on the serial header and checked that it behaves mostly like my kobo mini (ie: ARM cores are shutdown, power manager circuit it is still alive) |

Long press of the power button reboots the device.
No way to power off without jailbreak. |

There are two ways to power down a non jailbroken kindle. Both have undesirable aspects.
1. Let the battery run down until the kindle powers itself off. 2. Use the ;shpm search bar command https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kin..._Bar_Shortcuts But beware that this will remove all user configuration and data (including books and registration). There are multiple quick and easy was to power off a jailbroken kindle. |

Oases 2 and 3 and PW4 are able to hibernate, which is almost the same a power off. If all kindles could do that, almost all the need to power down a kindle would go away. Quote:
e-ink screens only use power when changing. A sleep screen image uses no more power than a blank screen. Kindles are computers doing stuff in the back ground. There are at least two different pieces of evidence that kindles do not power power down except under unusual conditions. 1. Kindles take a long time to boot. That doesn't happen after using a mumbo jumbo method to power a kindle off. 2. People have examined system logs after waking a kindle after a mumbo jumbo power of method and they are no different from those of a normal wake from sleep. Quote:

No doubt the hibernation mode of later models is a CPU feature. Also best to leave connected to laptop for charging after logical eject when you added books as it's then doing indexing. |
