What do these tablet makers have against adding a SD card to their devices now? Is cloud storage really bringing in that much revenue? Does Samsung still offer a card slot with their models? I am looking at 10" tablets, but I want a card slot to go with it!

Last edited by jersysman; 11-01-2012 at 12:41 PM. Reason: Changed to 10" as pointed out.

Well, from the horse's mouth:

Or maybe there are other reasons... such as driving business to the cloud or paying Microsoft some amount per device for the use of the FAT filing system...

It is an easy way to artificially inflated prices. Instead of buying a 10 to 20 dollar SD card to double your storage space, you have to spend 100 dollars on the fancier version.

The most likely reason is "what the market will bear" pricing.
When you can charge an extra $100 for $5 worth of silicon and *still* be under-pricing the market leader you just smile and pocket the extra $80 the buyers give you.

Frederick Douglass comes to mind, despite the very different context:
Quote:
Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them.

Samsung is still adding Micro SD and that's probably why they are dominating in sales.

The fact nearly all cheaper devices have MicroSD tells me the main reason some companies aren't adding them is solely to do with ripping off the customer and in Google and Apples case trying to sell cloud storage as well.

He didn't say that. But since you mention it, Apple is the company that made that strategy acceptable to consumers. Not that consumers really accepted it initially, they just wanted the devices so badly they put up with it, and now they are used to it.

Is anyone forcing Google to adopt this pricing strategy? Or are they ultimately responsible for their own business decisions?

To an extent.
Consumers, even more. Hence the quote. What people accept meekly becomes the definition of what is acceptable.
As long as people are willing to overpay for storage, whether for Apple or Google, *everybody* will feel able to do the same.

BTW, over at CNET, Carnoy is not-quite-ranting over Apple's pricing:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31747_7...a-ipad-memory/

Quote:
Retina Display aside, my problem with the iPad Mini -- and why I'm kvetching (bring on the "Would you like some cheese with your whine?" comments) -- is the $100 Apple charges for going from 16GB to 32GB, plus another 100 bucks to go from 32GB to 64GB. (The $130 premium you pay for the Wi-Fi + cellular models is the subject for another article).

Of course, it has every right to charge whatever it wants and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Apple makes its biggest margins on the memory bumps across its entire line of iOS products. After all, they're the same products; they just have more memory.

I can understand paying a nice premium over what you'd typically pay for flash memory, but it gets a little ridiculous when you're paying five times what you'd normally pay. Sure, you can say the memory in Apple devices is higher grade than your basic flash memory. But the breakdowns iSuppli has done of the iPad 2 and third-gen iPad show that the bump from 16GB to 32GB costs Apple about $17. It's another $34 or so to go from 32GB to 64GB. According to iSuppli, 64GB of NAND flash memory runs around $67 -- or at least it did this past March.
Apple provides pricing cover for Google, just as the BPH's high ebook prices provide cover for their competitors. As long as consumers pay the higher prices willingly there is no incentive for either of them to change.

Be very careful what you say around this fellow as he's very touchy about anything remotely Apple. He already made a personnel attack against me as i mentioned Apple products in my NEXUS 4 thread.
