What do these tablet makers have against adding a SD card to their devices now? Is cloud storage really bringing in that much revenue? Does Samsung still offer a card slot with their models? I am looking at 10" tablets, but I want a card slot to go with it!

Or maybe there are other reasons... such as driving business to the cloud or paying Microsoft some amount per device for the use of the FAT filing system... Graham Last edited by Graham; 10-31-2012 at 01:29 PM. |

It is an easy way to artificially inflated prices. Instead of buying a 10 to 20 dollar SD card to double your storage space, you have to spend 100 dollars on the fancier version.

When you can charge an extra $100 for $5 worth of silicon and *still* be under-pricing the market leader you just smile and pocket the extra $80 the buyers give you. Frederick Douglass comes to mind, despite the very different context: Quote:

The fact nearly all cheaper devices have MicroSD tells me the main reason some companies aren't adding them is solely to do with ripping off the customer and in Google and Apples case trying to sell cloud storage as well. |

He didn't say that. But since you mention it, Apple is the company that made that strategy acceptable to consumers. Not that consumers really accepted it initially, they just wanted the devices so badly they put up with it, and now they are used to it.

Is anyone forcing Google to adopt this pricing strategy? Or are they ultimately responsible for their own business decisions?

To an extent. Consumers, even more. Hence the quote. What people accept meekly becomes the definition of what is acceptable. As long as people are willing to overpay for storage, whether for Apple or Google, *everybody* will feel able to do the same. BTW, over at CNET, Carnoy is not-quite-ranting over Apple's pricing: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31747_7...a-ipad-memory/ Quote:
