Fee increase at Free Library of Philadelphia
The fee charged for a non-resident card has just recently been raised to $35 per year.
With very long wait lists. |

That's too bad about the fee, but I get a lot of value from FLP, so I won't begrudge it when I have to re-up next year. They have a pretty good selection of e-books.
I personally don't find the FLP wait lists too bad for most mysteries and some non-fiction - JM2CW. I can have up to 10 titles on hold at a time, and that means that usually I have a couple of FLP books going at a time, which is fine with me. I do wish I could control the order the holds get fulfilled (yeah, I know, just a daydream), and sometimes I get too many holds all come through at once, but hey, that happens with holds on p-books too! |

I think the initial $15 fee made them too popular. The increase in membership is the reason for the very long wait lists. To alleviate that, they need to purchase extra copies; which means raising the fee.

Are they accepting payment other than checks yet? That's what put me off initially.

Yes, there is a topic somewhere here descirbing the process (something with Aus and NZ in the headline if remember correctly). In short, the fee is put on your account as a "late" fee and you can pay it by credit card.
Edit: Found the topic I mentioned https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...t=93451&page=2 Keep reading onwards from there, because there seems to be a size issue with the attachment to get the e-mail to go through. I scanned mine with not the best resolution, and grayscale (I think - or was it black/white...) Last edited by Asawi; 03-29-2011 at 11:36 AM. |
