Amundsen hadde lenge syslet med planer om å fly til Nordpolen, før han til slutt, takket være Lincoln Ellsworths generøsitet, kunne sette lette med to båtfly fra Ny-Ålesund og sette kursen nordover. Men før de nådde målet, måtte de nødlande. Etter uker med slit klarte de å få ett av flyene på vingene igjen og vende tilbake til sivilisasjonen og livet.
