BUT I can't get it working!
I held the power button for about a minute until it came on.
Then it wants me to "activate".
I don't have a smartphone - so i elected to sign in with kobo.
It asked for email address and password.
But it would not accept a password I typed in.
Neither did it supply one.
What can I do to get this kobo working?
With or without an account.
I'd rather not have one - but will if I must.
In case it's relevant, I use linux, not windows or mac.
I can install windows if I must.
What are the very first steps?
First if you do not have an account with Kobo, go to Kobo.com and create an account. If you have an account, use the UN/PW. After you've connected the Kobo to WiFi, use the account UN/PW.

Read this post about enabling the sideloaded mode:

Thanks to both of you JSWolf and Sirtel.

First I followed JSWolf and created an account and activated it.
Then I followed Sirtel and added SideloadedMode=true to as described in the linked article.
Next I launched Calibre and installed the kobo plugin and configured it.
Then Calibre could see the Kobo and I put two epubs onto it.

It was a long journey, with much puzzlement and guesses!
How on earth would most people get on?
There is nothing in the Quick Start that came with the device.
Nor in the User Guide I downloaded.

What is "Karma" in these forums?
