Thanks for the correction. It's been many years since I read this. I obviously confused the two authors: the one who wrote the Hitchiker's books (Douglas) and the one who wrote a few books with animal characters (Richard).

Thanks for the info on this, which I have just now purchased. (Empire of the Ants - Bernard Werber)

I'm also going to read this short story, by some dude I never heard of. (The Empire of the Ants - H.G. Wells)
