Amazon begins shipping Ad-Supported Kindle
" Kindle with Special Offers" is an ad supported version of the Wifi only model and retails for $114 in the US
In return for that super-low price the customer will receive Advertisements in the form of screen savers and banners on the home screen. http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/a...advertising-r/ |

I was surprised to hear that 4 people in the office had jumped on this offer. I wonder how well they'll like it.

I really don't see myself permanently opting in (can I opt out by paying back the 25 bucks?) to advertisements for a one-time reduction of 25$. If this was limited to a year, or there was some other ongoing incentive that'd be another story.

I said this was going to happen about a year ago....it was just too easy to get them in there, and I believe that books will be next

What surprised me was the price for this. I expected them to do it, but figured this would come in a $99 USD instead of $114. Honestly, I can't imagine buying this one for a mere $25 differential. Even if they NEVER put ads in books, it's still nothing I want for that price differential.

What's the pool on how many days it takes for the hackers to come up with a modification to remove the ads?

If the ads are only on the screensavers and home page, would they ever really bother anyone?
Granted, it isn't much of a discount and I do like having custom screen savers a great deal... . |

It's not enough of a discount to entice me into an ad supported platform. If I didn't have a Kindle, and the price was $99, as CRussel suggests, then I'd probably jump on it.

I hate them while browsing my favorite forums, you think I want it in my e-Reader!? Heck no!! In the forums I know they help pay for keeping the forum going... but on my reader!? I rather pay a little more and not have the hassle of ads...

Presumably you would also need to have the wifi on all the time so that it can download new adverts? |
