Interesting Workaround for KSO.

I just got a new KSO with the newer low price and I figured I mess around and see what I could see. I noticed when I first turned it on that the Menu options were not for a KSO but for a regular Kindle. Within a few minutes, it phoned home and downloaded the .assets folder and whatever else it uses and it now showed Special Offers under the Menu.

This got me to thinking so I did a Factory Reset and just before it it went wireless, I turned wireless off. Then I went through the steps to copy the 0.5 version of the 3.2.1 jailbreak, updated, and I did the same with the 0.22.N screensaver hack. Both updates went fine and I now had a KSO with the screensaver hack working. I finally added the blank .assets file to the system directory on the Kindle.

Now came the part I figured I would only have a 20% chance of success; I needed to turn on 3G to see what would happen when I registered. First I registered and let it turn on the WiFi and as soon as I was registered and I saw my collections coming through I shut off wireless. I loaded the files with all the documents and my original collection files from my other Kindle and after a restart, I have a working Kindle with all the non-Amazon documents and collections and last page read intact.

Now I tried leaving the wireless on a while and tried out Archived Items, Active Content and general web browsing. All things worked except Active Content. I now have a 3G with hacked screen savers, no bar at the bottom of the Home Page, and everything working other than Active Content.

I am assuming you are starting from firmware 3.2.1 ,
also do you think it would work with a wifi only kindle?
Sounds like a good idea
get amazon items, use calibre to back them up, then factory reset, the follow your instructions

to make things easyer, could you provide links to the items, and also where is the .assets file located on the kindle

This is related to my interests. I will most likely get my KSO Wifi Kindle tomorrow and I would love to play around and actually bypass and remove the advertisements.

The link talking about 3.2.1 jailbreak is here.

The screen saver hacks are here. I used the same method discussed in the jailbreak hack to get the screen saer file onto the Kindle while it was restarting.

The posts talking about creating a blank .assets file is here. The assets file/folder is in the system directory which is hidden so you have to set up your windows system to allow it to see hidden system files. This folder/file is not there when you first get the Kindle as it is added after it phones home the first time.

BTW, if you try this when it is just out of the box, you can skip the step which deals with registering as they are pre-registered form Amazon.

I have watched for three days and the fix still seems to hold. I would see no reason it wouldn't work for WiFi unless there is a significantly different way that Amazon deals with the screen savers which would not make any real sense. I'm going to do a factory reset later and go back to the regular system so I can see what AT&T actually sends.

Also, keep in mind, they can shut Kindles off at will, they do so with stolen units. If they wanted to, they could determine that nothing they are sending is being received and they could theoretically shut you down for violating terms of service.
