Largest size ePub Sony's can handle?
Sorry if I missed it somewhere, but I haven't been able to find any discussion.
I collect fanfic, and would like to combine various HTML files into collections. How big file can an ePub be and still be comfortable for most machines to handle? I'm not thinking about page numbers, but just a good estimate on final file size so I don't lock the reader up trying to handle it. If it helps I have Sony's. Or should I ask this there? |

I think the magic number is around 370kb per xhtml file

As long as the ePub is made to mobile ADE standards, I think there should be no issue with any fanfic story.

I seem to remember it was 300kB uncompressed and 100kB compressed. It might be that those are true kB = 1000 B and not kiB = 1024 B.

For what it is worth, calibre splits files it is converting at 260kb.

There is no size limit on the epub besides the memory on the reader I guess. However, like said above, the size of a separate xhtml file must not be larger than around 300kb. That is a lot of text though...

I think that is why Kovid chose 260K for Calibre's segment size. As you said, that big is a LOT of text |

Thanks, guys. That'll give me some numbers to play with.
And yes, some of the fanfic collections I could put together would be quite large. But I don't want to hang the memory of my machine up. |

If you use Calibre to make the ePub, then you won't have a problem.

I think the .epub file could, theoretically, take up several GB (well, probably not since it's a zip archive after all and text compresses very well), but the content itself should be split into different .xhtml files either by title, chapter or if it's something really really long (doubtful), you could segment it as Part I, II, etc. or simply just cut it at a period (.) and it will resume the next page starting at the top.
