Police is the tenth Harry Hole title by Jo Nesbo. It's £0.99 at Kindle UK right now.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00CU8QBBC

Spoiler:
Quote:
An edge-of-your seat Harry Hole page-turner you won't be able to put down.

'Nesbo is several steps ahead of you in this endlessly twisting, multi-layered thriller' Sun

The police urgently need Harry Hole.

A killer is stalking Oslo's streets. Police officers are being slain at the scenes of crimes they once investigated, but failed to solve. The murders are brutal, the media reaction hysterical.

But this time, Harry can't help anyone.

For years, detective Harry Hole has been at the centre of every major criminal investigation in Oslo. His dedication to his job and his brilliant insights have saved the lives of countless people. But now, with those he loves most facing terrible danger, Harry can't protect anyone.

Least of all himself.

A bunch of JD Robb's "In Death" books have dropped to £2.99 at Kindle UK. (And one to £0.99) Most of these are fairly recent price drops, but a couple are older or semi-perm at £2.99. This is a bit much IMO, especially for the older backlist ones, but still a bargain off the "normal" UK price of £4.99. And way better than the "normal" US price of $8.99-ish. So if you like this series, here you go...

Malice by Keigo Higashino is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Acclaimed bestselling novelist Kunihiko Hidaka is found brutally murdered in his home on the night before he's planning to leave Japan and relocate to Vancouver. His body is found in his office, a locked room, within his locked house, by his wife and his best friend, both of whom have rock solid alibis. Or so it seems.

At the crime scene, Police Detective Kyochiro Kaga recognizes Hidaka's best friend, Osamu Nonoguchi. Years ago when they were both teachers, they were colleagues at the same public school. Kaga went on to join the police force while Nonoguchi eventually left to become a full-time writer, though with not nearly the success of his friend Hidaka.

As Kaga investigates, he eventually uncovers evidence that indicates that the two writers' relationship was very different that they claimed, that they were anything but best friends. But the question before Kaga isn't necessarily who, or how, but why. In a brilliantly realized tale of cat and mouse, the detective and the killer battle over the truth of the past and how events that led to the murder really unfolded. And if Kaga isn't able to uncover and prove why the murder was committed, then the truth may never come out.

Malice is one of the bestselling—the most acclaimed—novel in Keigo Higashino's series featuring police detective Kyochiro Kaga, one of the most popular creations of the bestselling novelist in Asia.

The Novice's Tale is $1.99 in the US right now. And most of the rest of the series seems to have dropped a bit in price, mostly to $4.99 which is too high IMO for old backlist, but not the $7.99 to $8.99 I was remembering. And The Novice's Tale is also only £0.99 at Kindle UK, where some of the other books in the series are in the £2 - £4 range.

The links below are still good for the US, and here's for the UK:

Sorry. Meant to post this in fiction. Even though it is about a killer and a cop, I don't think it is a thriller.

The Ploughmen by Kim Zupan is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Steeped in a lonesome Montana landscape as unyielding and raw as it is beautiful, Kim Zupan's The Ploughmen is a new classic in the literature of the American West.

At the center of this searing, fever dream of a novel are two men—a killer awaiting trial, and a troubled young deputy—sitting across from each other in the dark, talking through the bars of a county jail cell: John Gload, so brutally adept at his craft that only now, at the age of 77, has he faced the prospect of long-term incarceration and Valentine Millimaki, low man in the Copper County sheriff's department, who draws the overnight shift after Gload's arrest. With a disintegrating marriage further collapsing under the strain of his night duty, Millimaki finds himself seeking counsel from a man whose troubled past shares something essential with his own. Their uneasy friendship takes a startling turn with a brazen act of violence that yokes together two haunted souls by the secrets they share, and by the rugged country that keeps them.

Hostage by Robert Crais is $1.99 at Amazon US.

I haven't read the book, but really enjoyed the movie.

Quote:
An ex-con with delusions of grandeur and his tagalong brother unwittingly team up with a psychopath one wrong word away from meltdown. When their late afternoon joyride turns into a random act of violence, they take a family hostage in the affluent bedroom community of Bristo Camino. Enter Chief of Police Jeff Talley, a stressed-out former LAPD SWAT negotiator who is hiding from his past. Plunged back into the high-pressure world that he desperately wants to forget, Talley soon learns that his nightmare has only begun.

The hostages are not who they seem, and the home contains secrets that even L.A.’s most lethal and volatile crime lord, Sonny Benza, fears. As Talley tries to hold himself together and save the people inside, the full weight of Benza’s wrath descends on him, putting the police chief and his own family at risk. Soon, all involved are held hostage by the exigencies of fate and the only one capable of diffusing the standoff is the least stable of them all.

Hostage is a blistering stand-alone thriller with superb characters in crisis, multistranded plotting, and pitch-perfect Southern California sensibility.

From the Shadows is the seventeenth and most recent (2022) in James R Benn's Billy Boyle WWII series. I had kind of lost track of the series, since the books don't often go on sale in e-book, but had an ARC of the previous book (Road of Bones) last year, and liked it as much as I remembered liking the early ones. Benn does a really nice job of both background and mystery, IMO. From the Shadows is $2.99 right now in the US and £1.48 in the UK.

Quote:
In southern France in 1944, Captain Billy Boyle works with French Resistance fighters to protect a Royal Navy Commander, uncovering a wide web of subterfuge and betrayal in the process.

Southern France, 1944: What should be a simple assignment with a Special Operations Executive officer gets complicated quickly as Billy navigates the tensions between Resistance groups in the process of gathering information on Vichy officials and other collaborators who escaped with the retreating Germans. Unexpectedly, the SOE officer has many enemies in the Resistance, linked to the failed Vercors uprising. Diana Seaton, Billy’s wartime lover, crosses paths with him as she and legendary SOE agent Christine Granville embark on a humanitarian mission on behalf of those killed while helping the SOE.

The search for a witness to a deadly explosion leads Billy to the legendary 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit made up of Nisei soldiers that became the most highly decorated unit in the history of the US Army.

With sacrifice and betrayal afoot, Billy doesn’t know who he can trust, or how close to death this case may bring him.
