Dear Ms,

The possibility of upgrading the device without using a SD card has been highly requested by the Cybook's usuers.
Our dev team is working on this point and it should be available in a coming firmware upgrade.

Best regards,

Yes there have been a few comments on the Bookeen Blog about problems with some users not being able to use their SD card, and asking for a by-pass for the installation...

But did you notice that this is coming in a "future" upgrade? Ummm... And if one has "bricked" the Cybook during the firmware upgrade - to the point it won't recognize *any* SD card - one is SOL.

I'm pretty sure that to enable upgrade without a card you'll have to upgrade your firmware... and that needs a card!

They may find a way to do it the way Sony does. Of course that may require drivers and it would probably be limited to a certain platform.

So true. And one wonders if the Gen4 will still use Linux? I'm thinking that Cybook may well opt to follow Astak's lead and switch to WinCE5. ( Of course, this is only a GUESS, so please do not quote me on this! ) Given that Netronix is pretty much switching all the touchscreen-capable devices to WinCE5, and that with WinCE5 comes the ability to run eReader *OR* Mobipocket...

I also have the same problem, but cannot imagine why would it be so difficult to update it using the internal memory. Waiting for them to sort this out...

If they need to repartition the internal disk then it can be hard to do it from the internal disk. Also if the internal disk is corrupt then people will have problem. So from a support standpoint it is easier to say to people to take a new SD card and update and the update can check the internal disk.

The Vivi bootloader can be configured to allow for USB-cable updating, but I believe that option was not chosen in the current version. And, until a version is installed that *does* have this option set, the Cybook will require an SD card firmware update - although there is the possibility that someone with an older Cybook could crack it open and update the firmware via the serial port. (No, before anyone asks, the serial port is NOT accessible from the outside.)

Not if the system check on all disks for the update file.

Why would they need to repartition the internal disk? Is there a separate firmware partition on it, which is to small? Now that would be really annoying.

So far as I've heard, the current firmware does NOT check anything but the currently-in-position bootimage file and the SD card firmware update. But then, that's one of the things a future update is supposed to change, yes?
