Angry Calibre does not see my Kindle

I am a new member and have used Calibre in the past with no problems. I now have a new Kindle Fire HD8 (my previous was a Kindle HD7). I have a number of books I have downloaded that I want to put on my Kindle using Calibre. I can add the book to Calibre and I can convert the format to mobi for my Kindle. However, when I go to "Send to Device" to click "send to main memory" this is greyed out so not clickable. Further down that same menu is "set default send to device action" and the sub-menu does have "send to main memory" which I have clicked but nothing happens. Also in my menu toolbar in Calibre there is no "Device" icon. So I'm not sure Calibre even sees my Kindle. I've read and looked in the help files but nothing has helped. Hope that someone can clue me in as to what I might do to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions or advice. JD

Start by following the suggestions in the Sticky post at the top of this forum titled: My device is not detected by calibre.

Calibre Does Not See My Kindle

I followed the advice in the post by DoctorOhh. I have the latest version of Calibre and have plugged in my Kindle Fire and it is seen by my computer. Also I went to the Preferences as suggested by the creator of Calibre. My device is not in the ignored area and in the Plugin area there is an entry for "Kindle Fire Device Interface (1.0.0) by John Schember Communicate with the Kindle Fire." Next I went to Debug Device Detection and ran this process with my device (Kindle Fire HD8) attached. It said to post the output in this forum. Here it is:

When I was using my Kindle Fire HD7 with Calibre, I was able to convert books and load them onto my Kindle. However with my new Kindle Fire HD8 I cannot even see that my device if seen by Calibre. In the menu bar there is not an icon for "Device". Hopefully kovidgoyal the creator may have a solution. Looking at the above output I did compare the serial number shown to the serial number of my Kindle Fire HD8 and it is the same. At the end it indicates: "Not a suitable MTP device, ignoring No suitable MTP devices found." Hopefully there is just a setting somewhere that I need to adjust. I think that Calibre is a wonderful program and hope that I can discover how to get my new Kindle recognized by Calibre and proceed with putting ebooks on it from various sources. Thanks kovidgoyal for this great program. JD

Calibre Does Not See My Kindle

My thanks to kovidgoyal for his reply and suggestion. I've tried this with negative results. I did check the storage of my Kindle and have 5.94 Gigabytes free, so don't understand why it thinks I have no space/storage available. I ran the debug process again and this time it came up with some different results. It does now say that "Opened Fire successfully" and goes on with other info and does show the storage capacity and the free space which is close to what my Kindle indicates. So from this info it seems that it does see the Kindle and has opened it and does see the free space, but when I go to send to device, the send to main memory is greyed out. So still cannot seem to proceed. I feel closer, but still not there. I am going to post the results to the debug info again with the new data. Here it is:

I'm sorry to be a pest but really like Calibre and in the past have used it with my Kindle Fire HD7 and was able to convert and move titles to that Kindle. Just would love to be able to to this with my new Kindle Fire HD8. Again thanks to kovidgoyal for his help. Hope there is something more I can do to get Calibre and my Kindle working together.

Just wait, the first time you connect to a device it takes a while as calibre has to scan the entire device to find books. Look at the jobs spinner in the bottom right corner, it will be rotating indicating that calibre is still working.

Calibre Does Not See My Kindle

Again, my thanks to kovidgoyal for his reply. I did not see anything turning at the bottom right, so decided to install Calibre on my wife's laptop and see if it would work there. First we installed Calibre 64 edition and it did not work. My wife uninstalled this and then installed the regular Windows Calibre and then she could see the Kindle and the device icon was in the menu bar. So I went through all this on my desktop and installed the regular Calibre for Windows but still it did not work. So I uninstalled every version of Calibre and then installed the regular Calibre for Windows and finally it worked!! I've been adding, converting and moving many of my downloaded ebooks to my Kindle and am very happy. Hopefully it will continue to work. Thanks again kovidgoyal for all your help. Calibre is a great and amazing program.

Calibre Does Not See My Kindle

Woe is me. I had to shut down and go to church and upon returning wanted to continue with moving books to my Kindle but now I'm back where I was at the beginning. Calibre again is not seeing my Kindle. I have not changed anything since it was working earlier today when I posted my success, but now, it's back to not seeing my Kindle. I am so frustrated with this problem. Also, the moderator posted that I needed to use Spoiler tags around my posts and I'm so sorry, but have no idea what a spoiler tag is and how to create one. Sorry, but I'm not up to snuff on this. In any case, I'm wondering why now when I started up Calibre and hooked up my Kindle that Calibre is not seeing my Kindle and it's basically back to that first set of data that I posted where it said "no suitable MTP device found."

JD
The way to solve this is open disk management, you will see the kindle there, click change drive letter to say K and close disconnect the kindle and re connect it will show as a removable drive K and will be recognised

In your log file, look at the line:

'storage': [],

Basically, this says your device has no storage available. The first suggestion it to reboot your device and your computer. If this doesn't work, post a new log in spoiler tags to cut down on the length of your message.

Edit: The spoiler icon is between the Youtube and Maps icons, it looks like an eye with an X.

Device: kobo forma, Kobo Libra, Huawei media Tab, fire HD10, PW3 HDX8.9,
i suspect this is due to the new device running fire OS 6, and Op needs to find , on the device, a connect as... menu, which appears only when device is connected, probably as a pull down from top of screen thing
there are 2 ways for device to connect to PC and device is defaulting to the wrong one.
this is all explained in much more detail in other threads
it is a bug/feature of android 6/ fire OS 6 that devices connect by default as media devices, not as storage devices, hence the no storage..
the older device , runnign os 5 , or os 4, would not have this "feature"
android smart phones also require use of this connect as... menu , every time they are plugged in to transfer files

a much simpler solution , for tablets, is to get calibre companion and move the books wirelessly, not via USB, that bypasses the problem
as an example, from a quick google search, here are instructions for a chromebook. the Fire tablet shoudl have a similar menu... you have to locate the option marked in bold and use it
Unlock your Android device.
With a USB cable, connect your device to your Chromebook.
Unlock your device.
On your device, tap the "Charging this device via USB" notification.
Under "Use USB for," select File Transfer.
On your Chromebook, the Files app opens. Use it to drag files.
When you're done, unplug the USB cable.

2 questions:

Is there a reason you are running 32bit Calibre (your machine is 64bit. You can uninstall Calibre and then install the 64 bit version without grief )

You are (trying) running a user defined device driver (instead of the standard Kindle one) You can delete the one that says USER_DEFINED from the configuration folder.
